Had a word on facebook earlier with a couple of British Legion members on my friends list:

Mong 1: In my opinion, posting messages on Facebook wishing all soldiers dead is just as serious as posting offensive jokes about missing children. So, one culprit gets community service and the other gets 3 months' jail. What message is that supposed to send? The law's a joke in this country.

Mong 2: I heard about this earlier, it's disgusting. I'm all for freedom of speech but these arseholes need stopping. They are sick whether they truly believe what they say or are trying to be amusing. As the mother of a soldier, all I'll say is, gimme 5 minutes and a room with no cameras.

ME: Whatever happened to "Sticks and Stones may break my bones"? If you're offended by comments about dead kids, soldiers, poppies or whatever made up religion you believe in then you seriously need to grow a pair and get the fuck off the internet.

Mong 1: It's about respecting the people who risk their lives for your freedom

ME: Respect isn't compulsory though. And I don't want to live in a society where it is compulsory. That's only a stone's throw from "I Love Big Brother!!!"

Mong 1: You've only got the freedom of speech you have because brave men and women died for it. Freedom carries with it responsibility. Trouble is, these days too many fucking liberals bang on about freedom and rights with no hint of responsibility.

Mong 2: "Sticks and stones may break my bones" was left in the schoolyard when I grew a pair and stood up for my freedom to say and be offended at what the fuck I like. Sitting around thinking fuck it they're only words on the internet is whats handing our country over to people that would give you big brother in a second if they get the chance. Respect is earned and certainly not compulsory but being disrespectful to those that put themselves in harms way to defend our freedoms is pretty bloody low in my book. I'd say you got it spot on with the liberals, our great grandfathers would turn in their graves if they saw what a once Great Britain has become at the hands of these people.

ME:If you think that our forces, whether Military, or police have fought for freedom of speech then you are seriously deluded. British establishment interests, yes. British civil liberties , no. The fight for civilian freedoms was usually fought by civilian protestors and benevolent lawyers. The soldiers who went to fight in WW2 had largely no choice in the matter. Prison or beatings was the alternative. Ask a WW2 veteran if he was fighting for freedom of speech, and whether he would rather have stayed at home with his family. You might not get the fantasy island answer you wish for. Hope this helps.

I'd have posted a trollface if it were possible.

Never try to debate idiots, they will beat you with experience every time.

My thoughts in no particular order:

They are the modern version of "I'm not racist but....[insert something extremely racist]....."

They aren't heroes.

Freedom of speech does not have limits, if it does it isn't freedom of speech.

My favoured brand of corned beef (classy) has a 'Help for Heroes' thing now, so I can't buy it!

'Help for well-meaning fools who let themselves get used to illegally occupy other people's countries' would be more like it.

Kissinger is claimed to have referred pointedly to military men as "dumb, stupid animals to be used" as pawns for foreign policy.

- And he's right!

There are no sacred cows. If someone posts on a social media site and offends people so be it, that is freedom of expression. If someone posts on the same site an incitement to commit a criminal act that is different.
ie....."I hate Belgians and wish they were dead", is an opinion.
........"I hate Belgians and am recruiting a militia to kill as many of the greasy little mussel and chip eaters as possible, we leave on Eurostar on Friday come tooled up as I only have 25 AKs", is not freedom of speech

I don,t mind having respect for injured soldiers and the fallen, even when the politics of it are nearly always questionable.

That does not mean at the same time one does not have an opinion on said politics, the very same politics that throw the 'heros' in our faces, cunning deflection once more, show us the missing limbed heros rather than debate the underlining reasons for the so called war on terror.

You want some fucking heros, send um in to syria to save the thousands dieing there.

If a young person decided to become a farmer and in their line of work to feed the country they fell into the slurry pit and drowned.....are they a hero.?

To me if you take a job and get paid to go out Killing in other countries then you are more a mercenary than a hero.

FTFY.

Oh, wait, we're not a German province, are we? Luckily, not everyone hid under their beds seventy years ago. Otherwise you wouldn't have the luxury of spouting such hilarious mental arsegravy for all the world to read.

I'm sure KH can answer for himself, but in fact Nazi Germany originally wished to be allied to, and help protect the British empire as it was.

We wouldn't be speaking German at all - WWII kicked off when Britain declared war, didn't it? Also Churchill presented the possibility of invasion when he knew darn well there was no chance, to motivate the population into handing over their sons more willingly.

Of course. And it was CIA bombers who were responsible for the blitz.

Go and read some books! Hitler was left with no choice after the RAF kept dropping bombs on Germany. During the 'phoney war' of the early days, he forbade air raids on England.

Of course I'm not sticking up for Hitler or the Nazis - just the truth of what happened.

Read into a group of politicians and financiers called 'The Focus'. Churchill was in their pocket after they saved him having to sell Chartwell - there's more going on there than you might think.

I'd have told mong 1 and 2 that for someone who doesn't believe in freedom of speech, they seem to have a lot to say.

Respect to the soldiers, the military and their families, but no respect to the people who assume every battle is for the good of the country and all that other bullshit.

If Britain pulled out of the middle east tomorrow, there wouldn't be an angry horde of Arabs charging across the channel. We wouldn't be invaded, mortared, air-striked, anthraxed or whatever. Nothing would change.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE FIGHT OVER IN AFGHANISTAN IS ACTUALLY ALL ABOUT?! Because I've never, ever known!!!

Some people live in such fucking stupid historical ideals. They learn about WW2 and the British Empire, and then forever they keep their minds in that shadow, assuming every overseas operation is for the good of king and country, and all that other romantic tally-ho bullshit.

Hats off to the soldiers, in fact I reckon I would love military life, but fuck the politics of it. The last time we truly needed HM Forces was the Falklands. The rest of it has been political puppetry. All bollocks.

It's just such a shame there are so many fucking idiots who have their mouths and arses spread open wide for the spoon-feeding of all this 'heroic soldiers risking their lives for our freedoms' bullshit.

Ugh.
