Shortly after a guy getting 3 months for repeating tasteless jokes here's a guy getting 4 months for writing anti-police slogans on his t-shirt:

https://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/oct/11/manchester-man-jailed-tshirt-police?newsfeed=true

I think I may try to nationalise over here rather than just reside! The UK is becoming a scary, scary place...

Beer is cheaper due to low tax - bought a crate of Leffe (24 bottles) the other day for €19 - about £14-15. Petrol is much cheaper, there's incredibly low tax in general.

Dunno about the coke, but coca-cola is about £1 per 2l bottle Wink

Housing is expensive though - paying €750pm for a small studio flat Shocked

It's a microstate next to a large state. They have a good lifestyle effectively living off the backs of their neighbours.

This is kinda true. There are less than 600,000 people living in Luxembourg and probably close to 200,000 people who commute in from surrounding countries each day. That means a large proportion of the workforce pay income tax but do not use the services.

On top of that, the average salaries are high which means the tax take per employee is also high even though the percentage rates are lower than other EU countries.

If it's just within Luxembourg £1.20 is still quite pricey - you can't throw a frisbee in Luxembourg and have it land in the same country.

As for Daemonoid's original point, however, yes it's all rather scary. He was obviously wearing the shirt to irritate the rozzers (and people have been done to some extent for calling police horses gay in the past) but prison is extreme. I can only assume there's more to it than that.

Edit: yes I know I used the £ sign rather than the € sign, but they're more or less the same these days.

They have a funny system where you get 2hrs for €1.20 - it pretty much covers the country but as said, not a long way. Still, a single in London costs £2.00 (or £4.30 without an oyster Shocked ).

Skudd, I'm pretty sure they shut because they heard you coming Wink

Yup, they were scared he was going to eat all the pies and leave the population of Luxembourg starving.

Ha! Lager/Pils is average all over the world - can't really go wrong. Belgian beers are spectacular though - even the Dutch agree the Belgians make the best beer in the world.

As for tax haven, I think you just mean a well run country. Tax is low because there is no need to tax people over 50% of their earnings if you don't waste it all! They probably take more gross revenue per capita than the majority of other countries in Europe but the rates are low because they encourage high value industry into the country.

I didn't say that.

I was pointing out that those who have previously been convicted can usually expect to receive increasingly severe sentences, should they appear in court again (and again.)

As a philosophical point, is there really any such thing as 100% "free" speech? There can always be consequences, lawful or not.

Express something that somebody doesn't like and the consequence might be as simple as a punch in the face.

Express something that is prohibited by law (to maintain public order) and accept that the consequence might be a punishment of some sort.

Luxembourg was one of my favourite places I visited.

I stayed in a municipal campsite, which I think cost 3 euro each.

We went to the camp bar at about 5pm had a sandwich then drank till 1am ordered a box of fags on the bill too.

There were 3 of us and the total cost of the night was 59 euros.

The waitress was brilliant I don't think I had an empty glass for longer than 30 seconds. Laughing

That's a different thing entirely though it would come under conspiracy to commit....

It's like killing someone then bragging about it down the pub and moaning that there is no freedom of speech when you get nicked.

How can they lose something they don't have?

Freedom of speech is for dramatic movies, not reality.

I wonder how many 'comedians' could get done for so many of their jokes?
So often it seems to be a case they're intentionally doing stuff that would see the rest of us shunned because "it's ok, it's comedy".

Portugese Municipal camping was good too, and very cheap. In the summer we were paying 25 Euro a night for 9 people, two tents and a LWB van.

Not as keen on the spanish campsites, all the ones we found were at least 7 euro a night per person, as opposed to the Portuguese 2.50

I have Frankie Boyle on my twitter feed, I have absolutely no idea how he's not charged 2-3 times a week given the current state of things.

Another story that's annoyed me somewhat. It's a little more grey, but essentially footballer was racially abused, then defended himself after a punch was thrown. Unsurprisingly young, strong, fit footballer does better in a fight than yobs. Police case falls down as it was obviously self defence so they charge him for assaulting a police officer instead, because he 'pushed' two of them away while they arrested him for getting attacked.
