My computer has been a bit sluggish over the last couple of weeks, and after installing avg 2013 (pile of crap IMO), it hasn't so much as spotted a rogue cookie.

I downloaded malware bytes and after running a full scan it reported a registry key (DC3-FEXEC) and 2 stolen data files.

When I opened the data files to see what had been stolen, there was just my browsing history (strangely there was no porn sites listed in there Rolling Eyes ), a couple of google searches and my name, address and paypal password.

When I noticed the password had been stolen I checked paypal and found there hasn't been any strange transactions

Probably bollocks, most anti-spyware programs pick up loads of tracking cookies and shit, doesn't mean anything.

Don't I bloody well know it... I was using 2011 until recently and decided to upgrade to 2013. I have a fairly high spec PC, and never had a problem messing around while it was being scanned... now, with 2013 on the lowest resource settings I can't even open notepad for at least 2 minutes while scanning.

I don't bother with any, they're more trouble than they're worth and more often seem to make more problems than they solve, for me.

I just scan adhoc with spybot search and destroy and clear shit with crap cleaner (ccleaner)
eset was pretty good, used to use nod32 back in the day

I use Nod32 aswell, got it cheap because of a mate but before that I spent about 2 years downloading different free monthly trials and just kept swapping. THATS how tight I am Laughing

I used to be the same but over the past few years I just buy everything.

AVG, Malwarebytes, Windows... fuck it, can't be arsed looking on dodgey sites etc and not being able to update easily.

Intel 560 Celeron 2.13Ghz 2Gb Ram 120Gb SSD Win7 Ent. 64-bit.

I'm running AVG Free 2013.
I only installed the A/V, no add-ons or extras at all.

No probs here.

AVG has become a resource hog and worse still, it misses problems. Uninstall it and get yourself a copy of Avira or Avast. Both are free, both are light on resources, both score well in tests. Thumbs Up

Keep the Malwarebytes on your system and update/run it weekly or fortnightly - just the light scan is enough with that frequency.

Cracks are one of the biggest sources of malware. A cracked security product is worse than none at all given that there are reputable, good free ones available.

Agreed, Avast is solid and light. These days I use the three pronged defence of Avast, Windows firewall and not being a dick who clicks stupid stuff Wink

You sure about that?
Just because your AV picks them up doesn't mean they're dangerous, they just see that the codes been altered and flag it up as dangerous.

I don't even use an AV, for the past 4+ years, yet to have a virus, other than fucking ask toolbar that appeared when I installed daemon tools, despite telling it no, I don't want it Razz Rolling Eyes

I'm with bomberman on this and Alpha, just because it picks them up doesn't mean they actually are viruses is very true but then again, how would you know?

Not better knowing that you have a legit AV that updates the latest tables without any dodgy cracks / workarounds interfering with the process?

Positive about it. If you were a hacker, where would you hide your malware? Wink

All security products produce the occasional false positive that's a good thing though - at least they're on the case. What really matters is their ability to pick out the bad stuff and that's where independent tests come in handy. I'm an Information Security professional - I know most of the tricks and I wouldn't go without AV and malware programs - they're there as a second line of defence to your own mistakes - and we all make those.

Viruses are rare in the wild these days. Most malware is written by professional criminals rather than the wannabe haxor and it's well targeted with specific data theft in mind rather than random stupid damage. Some of them are very clever and very good at hiding their presence - can you be sure that your system is really clean unless you scan it?

Mostly from the users, anything scene release has generally had 'peer review'

True true, i've hex edited something before to crack it then had it auto-quarantined by my AV, that was a dick
But yeah, I rather use something free like spybot s&d as it updates regularly with new definitions and with cracked programs you don't get that most of the time. I suppose there is always the risk of there being backdoor root kits and shit on them still...

I know where the problem came from... or a very good guess anyway... a while ago I downloaded diablo 3 and when I tried to install it, it was flagged as having a virus. After checking a few sites it said it was something to do with the installer and it was fine blah blah blah.

Since I really wanted to try the game I done as it said and switched off the virus checker to install it then switched it back on again and done a system scan before even trying to run the game, since nothing was flagged I thought nothing of it.

When I went to try playing the game I found it needed a constant internet connection which fucked me up right away, so I ended up uninstalling it.

My system is a quad core 3.2ghz, 8gb (1333mhz), XP pro 64 (legit)... and when scanning for virus' I can't do anything else with the system...

So maybe I'll just do a format (got a lot of shit on there now), reinstall XP and install Windows 7 to my spare hard drive (which still doesn't have a single file on there).
