It's hardly surprising it's a lower premium. It's got half the power and lower top speed, plus lower capacity. The insurance companies thought is probably "Hmmmmm 21 yr old Ducati? It will be in a garage with a spanner attached more than it will be on a road" Laughing

I can't see it being an issue restricting it though.

I wouldn't think they'd they would even question a restriction on an old 400. They didn't ask for any cert's/proof when I had my cb.

It's a ducati, it will spend most of it's time at the mechanics getting repaired. Laughing

Stick it on a dyno and it may well come out at 33hp anyway considering the age and the nature of the engine. It won't be far off if it is making closer to the claimed fresh 42hp.
Certainly won't be any power to weight - as it's a 900cc bike 'restricted' to 400cc basically already (though with not as good spec components in some case.)

As above - no surprise it's cheaper to insure; a bike that will leave rice puddings everywhere feeling safe.

quick go compare for a 1991 ducati 400ss = £140 annually with "just got full lisence and 0 NCB"

i was just wondering what a ducati would cost in insurance and its cheaper than a honda CBF600!!!

now a serious question, how well would a 400 ducati restrict?

My monster 750 is only £180. The name doesn't make it expensive, in fact quite the opposite - they're less likely to be crashed. Same with cars, a Ferrari is cheaper than a Subaru, why? Cos chavy drive/crash subarus whereas old gents garage/drive ferraris to their yearly service.

Given that you won't even drill out two seized screws on a Chinese 125, I can't really see you being the best owner of an old Ducati.

Given that the solution to a couple of stubborn screws was a complete new braking system, I foresee a long future of replacement Ducatis...
