Dog biten by another dog - what treatment, vets?

We have a circa 4 month old whippet which has been bitten by an Akita.

Puncture wound about a third from the end of the snout and another above the eye.

It doesn't look THAT bad to me, but I don't have any experience of such things personally; and aware that in reality things can be more serious than they appear. Eye still working fine.

Apparently a bit of puss out of each - though seems to have dried up when I've seen it.

Has been bathed in salt water.

The puss I presume suggests some kind of infection which is to be expected, but whether it should be taken to the vets or not is the question - not a massive amount of money floating about, thus asking on here rather than taking him straight to the vets.

He's a little more lethargic than normal, but not massively so.

(Thankfully neither are mine!... There wasn't a fight from what I can tell, when I went to investigate the Akita was just standing there and didn't hear a skuffle or 'owt - reckon the puppy just surprised the Akita who can be a bit nervous at times.)

An infection will obviously require antibiotics, defo needs a vet to have a look imo.

Would of said treat your self, but if puss is about then id vet, also jabs may need to of been done / if not had already -

EST - about 60 quid fee and meds.

Bathe in salt water as you have done, then apply an antibiotic ointment.

Ointment will be available in farm supply/horsey shops - TFM, countrywide, CWG etc.

Done this many times on collies/sheep and seems to be the best method. Vet call outs get rather expensive.

The best DIY treatment is frequent bathing with something antiseptic; salt water is good, or a Hibiscrub solution, making sure you soak off any scabs and clean out the wound (squirting solution with a small syringe if the wound has depth). You want to prevent it from scabbing over and trapping the infection inside, leading to potential cyst formation.

I have treated numerous wounds on cats, dogs and horses in this way, after being advised by a vet.

Did consider it, but don't really like hassling people to answer my questions.

Seems to be much better now and pretty much sorted from what I can tell (though of course, still far from an expert, me.)

Bigger issue is the now-nervous owner who to my mind is being overly-cautious with them (as I think both puppy and Akita learnt to be a bit more cautious and it wasn't a scrap; the Akita was just standing there after.)
