Apply for a new one, they DVLA will write to the last registered keeper to inform them that a new V5 has been applied for and I think they either have to reply to say they are happy with that or reply to object to it.

When I bought my current car there was no V5 as the previous owner was moving to Oman and had sent it there with the rest of his stuff, so I applied for a new V5 and he received a letter from them asking him to confirm this was correct.

No problems!

You could ring again to verify she's sent it?

Edit: by the way the new keepers slip is no longer valid 2 months after the purchase date

FUCK!

Wrong. The new keepers slip is valid with a v62 form to obtain a log book for up to 12 months from the purchase. The 2 months is for taxing iirc.

Send DVLA an email.

When I bought a car a couple of years back the V5 went missing in the post between the DVLA and me.

They sent me a new one straight away.

They will also be able to tell you if they have recieved the V5 from the previous keeper.

Chase the previous owner about it, if no joy fill out this form. You don't have to pay in this sort of situation.

Ok, if you say so, but the police at the local car pound told me my new keepers slip is no longer valid (2 months after purchase)

I'm glad you know the law better than the police and the courts (the courts also verified a new keepers slip is invalid after 2 months)

New keeper slip is "valid" for 6 weeks for redemption of tax at a post office.

With regards to the V62, it is valid 12 months from purchase date shown on V5. This is why I do not like filling in the new keeper bit, I tend to leave it blank.

i got a V5 for a vehicle that was 4 years ago!

Just apply for the V5 and date recently the green slip and job done.

I had to do this for a bike I had for 4 years but only found the slip and applied for it. But dated it from 2 weeks when I applied.

If you date it back for 4 years they will chase you for vehicle tax!

Just do it

Mine took 4 weeks to arrive and I watched the previous owner put it in an envelope.

3 weeks isn't that long the DVLA.

Just to point out as well, V5 is not proof of ownership so it's no biggie if you have to wait a while for it, unless you want to sell.

Which prompts the DVLA to automatically issue a £40 fine to the previous owner for "failure to tell the DVLA of the change of ownership of your vehicle". Bastards of the highest order.

Indeed it's simple:

Fill in V62 and send to DVLA along with your V5C/2 (green slip) tick the box which says 'I do not enclose the fee because: the last owner is a lazy arse' and you'll recieve your V5 in 3-4 weeks time.

For this reason, I never fill out the new keeper supplement, it goes straight into my wallet empty. If I need to apply for a v5 or get tax several months later, I fill in a few weeks previous.

Dumbass, I would just apply using a v62, it won't cost you owt, I just did with the monkey, it has a box to tick saying I don't enclose the 25 quid fee as here is the new keepers bit.
