Hi Guys,

I'm a new biker. I have just purchased a Suzuki GN 125 first registered in the year 2000. It has Kilometers on the speedo so I an assuming this bike is an import. For insurance purposes is this bike a parallel import of grey import and is there anyway of telling if its an import on the registration documents - it just says suzuki gn 125 which I beleive is a UK bike?. What should I tell the insurance people?

Does it say that it was first used overseas on the v5? If not then it was first registered in the uk and should be fine to insure. There are a lot of bikes that were first registered in the uk that only have km/h speedos... both my Honda CG125 and Aprilia Pegaso are like this.

Thanks for your quick reply... I can not see anything on tha V5 apart from date first registered. Should I say that its an import? What does validation Character (P) mean on the V5?

The best bet is to go to an insurance comparison website, fill in all the details, and when it asks for the bike details just key in the number plate. If it comes up on the system and creates a quote then clearly everything is gravy.

I have filled in a comparison website and the bike details come up on the system. Does this mean its not an import? Also what do I put in import section? none? parallel or grey?

Thanks for your advise. The V5 says first registered in the UK. The insurance company I went with in the end confirmed also that my bike is a UK bike. I now know what to look for on a the V5 if a bike is an import. Thanks again

apparantly its because a chinese firm (if i can remember right) started making parts for the gn. i had one a few years back which was a 1994 model on a M plate, back then the speedo's were in mph, and they had wire wheels, unlike the 5 spoke wheels they have now. bulletproof engines though, mine had near 30k on it Laughing

It is a great bike mine is a 2000 model and has only 6K on the clock hence the reason for purchasing it. It is a pleasure to ride and is very cheap to run i can not believe how cheap compared to my car to commute to work.

My wife had a GN125 - one of the later Chinese ones with a km/h speedo and the 5 spoke wheels.

If you do want an mph speedo then Suzuki will relieve you of £200 for the privilege. We found, however, that the GN125 is still being made new and a company called Hartford import them and badge them for UK sale. A Hartford HD125 their name for it) speedo can be had for £40 and is the exact same as the GN125 speedo in all but the name on the face. The existing speedo cable slots right in, the speed reads bang on and cosmetically it's an ideal match.

You will need an mph speedo if you intend to pass your riding test on the bike. If you are just commuting/having fun then you can save yourself the bother and stick with km/h.

My GN 125 has the 5 spoke wheels and a Km speedo and milometer but it does have MPH in smaller numbers on the dial. That should be ok for the test?

That's not true.
I passed my tests on my CG125 which has a km/h speedo. I painted small lines in for 30,40 etc or you can get sticky overlays.

'fraid it is true - checked it with the DVLA. Incidentally I also passed my test on a bike with kmh speedo and pen marked mph over the top - it's just the luck of the draw if the examiner spots it.

In my wife's case she was explicitly told by the examiner that she must convert her speedo before her mod 2 and it was made clear that an overlay would not be acceptable. DVLA head office backed this up.

If you've got mph marked as well then you're fine Smile If the examiner is being particular then the markings must be on the dial and not overlaid on the glass (which is fine for you; they are on the dials).

Sorry, it would appear you are correct. The direct.gov site even says so. I would like to have had an arguement with the examiner if he'd tried to turn me away with my expertly painted on markings though Smile
