If I buy a bike SORN

It has MOT, so if I insure it am I allowed to ride it home?

I've just bought a car like this. Haad to get it insured, then take insurance, MOT and the green slip to he post office to get it taxed. Then was able to drive the bugger.
Had to leave the car on the drive way of the guy I just bought the car from until it was taxed. Sods law says a copper with PNC would be around the corner just as I drove down the road.

The obvious question is does the owner have it insured? Probably an obvious answer as well!

How far would you have to travel to get it home? You could book it in for an MOT. You only need insurance to ride it to the test center, which is as close to yours as possible. It's not like you knew it already had a MOT is it?

Drove a car from Glasgow to Birmingham with no tax, stopped in an internet cafe and bought tax, carried on to Canterbury. No stops once.

I would risk it. Of course when you spoke to the seller he said it had tax, then it turned out it didn't, so you're en route to post office now right.

Not forgetting once ownership changes SORN is null and void and you either have to tax or sorn again.

Its a very grey area, I personaly have never heard of anyone being done for no insurance just because they had no tax. If you check the TOS of any insurance documents they will state that the vehicle has to be fully road legal in order for the insurance to be valid. If its not taxed, its not fully road legal. If you had an accident the insurance would pay out to any 3rd party, but it could be a real ball ache to claim for your own damages on a fully comp policy. I know the chances of the no tax affecting you could be very low, but it could be a potential nightmare.

For something as minor as no road tax I think they would still be obliged to cover even 1st party claims although they might try it on. However they might make it a specific condition in their T&Cs which might cause an issue.

But the biggy would be getting done for no insurance, and that should not happen as long as the certificate has been issued.

I'm not suggesting that you could be uninsured in a way that would be illegal. I am just pointing out that its a grey area. Thanks for your input though.
