Ok here's the deal. I've been offered a bike, but it's only on offer for the next week or so, just after some opinions and stuff really, I don't know anything about these bikes at all, but I do understand they have a CBR400 motor?! Anyways, here's the details...

Honda CB-1, 38000km, new tyres, most of its service history, 1 years MOT, not sure about tax but that's irrelevant, mechanically sweet, bodywork is good but could do with a new coat of paint at some point in the near future. It's a 1990 G plate.

Been offered it for £600. Does that seem reasonable? Because it's an import the Glass's guide at work doesn't cover it I don't think, anyways, technical information would be good too, bhp, top speed, fuel economy, etc. Like I say, this is the first model of this bike I have come across.

Thanks in advance,

Scoob.

Very reliable so I hear, yours sounds a bit shagged so it probably needs a bit of TLC...for any parts queries, check the 400greybike forum out, thats the biggest 400cc site.

Can't really say anything apart from they're bloody bullet proof.....that doesnt say that this one is perfect though...any pictures?

Pictures of the bike to be found here. High resolution pictures so please be patient if you're on a slow connection.

Not got anything to add about the bike, but if you want it I've got a CB-1 Honda workshop manual, it's not great quality but it's perfectly readable and useable, 178 pages and 58mb so could send it over MSN or something, give me a shout if you want it. Thumbs Up

Hi

Nice enough little bikes. They had a good reputation. They also sold them in the USA.

That one seems to have had a fair amount of tidying up done. The bit just behind the steering head looks corroded on just about every one I see, but that one looks like it has been polished up.

The swinging arm and the like look a bit tatty.

Probably a reasonable buy for that money.

All the best

Keith

23k miles, 14 years old, looks fairly tidy for its age and use, any one I have seen goes a bit tatty in the paintwork department (laquer goes 'funny') after time so I think it is an honest bike judging by your piccys.

I'd check it starts, sounds sweet and ticks over well (it should sound like a sewing machine at tickover), maybe also take it for a quick test ride to check it is straight (no veering under hard braking/acceleration etc. as they crash well with little apparent damage) and has the usual leisurely bimble up to about 8.5k revs then a quick snap of acceleration up to the redline with induction howl rather than engine noise.

If it all checks out, I'd pay 600 quid and quietly chuckle to myself for having made a steal.

The CB1 doesn't have a CBR400 engine but its pretty close.

CB1's were popular courier bikes because they were cheap but they crash badly and parts are expensive.

If you want one there's one sitting in my Garden that has to go in the next 2 weeks for less than £300.

any bikes of that age etc you just need to use general common sense as sw says all usual checks etc

i believe parts are not too bad, plenty on e bay
and not that uncommon so should be ok

Not that bad. needs a service, battery and front mudguard. Then it should pass an MOT ok.

Rather bland styling but nearly as much poke as the replica 400’s (on which the engine’s based) and much more comfort for general riding keeps it in the game. Earlier CB-1 looks better, goes very nicely and handles well but quite a few were crashed in the UK – can withstand high speed slides with only minor apparent damage.

Looks okay. The CB-1 was one of the bikes I considered starting with.

sickpup, it sounds like a nice second bike, shame I don't have the space to store it until summer, and/or a way of getting it home from where you are.

I really can't see a CB-1 doing 125mph. So long as it does a ton and can get from Nottingham to Sheffield within a reasonable time period I will be happy Cool

Remember most bike company performance figures are from blueprinted examples straight out of the box and factory prepared.
In real life without tweeking few bikes attain the figures (there's too many built in tolerances on any bike's build).
Oh, you may see 125mph on the speedo, which means anything between 115 and 125 - still not bad on a 400cc naked!

Still, the CB-1 appears a good bike.

Let us know if you go for it and what it actually rides like.
Best of luck Thumbs Up
