so they spend 6 years looking at evidence make there report that cost millions
and the government will ignore it again and carry on regardless

why do they bother getting these commissions to look into thing's when they know unless it says what they want it to it will be ignored

Quote:
The penalties for drug misuse should be relaxed so that possession of small amounts would no longer be a criminal offence, the government has been urged.

The recommendation comes in a report from the UK Drug Policy Commission, which undertook six years of research.

Its detailed report concludes the UK is wasting much of the £3bn it spends each year on tackling illicit drugs.

The Home Office says drug use is falling and it does not plan to alter its approach.

The report, called A Fresh Approach to Drugs, says the annual estimated cost to England and Wales of class A drug use is £15bn.

It says that while drug use and drug problems have declined in the UK in recent years, there are still about 2,000 drug-related deaths each year and 380,000 problem drug users.
Classification credibility

Some 42,000 people in England and Wales are sentenced annually for drug possession offences and about 160,000 given cannabis warnings, it says, which "amounts to a lot of time and money for police, prosecution and courts".

The commission says giving people cautions and criminal records for having small quantities is not "proportionate" and suggests imposing civil penalties, such as fines, or drug treatment orders instead.

It also recommends individuals who grow a small number of cannabis plants should be treated leniently, to undermine organised crime networks that produce stronger types of cannabis.

However, it does not call for the decriminalisation or legalisation of most drugs.

"We do not believe that there is sufficient evidence at the moment to support the case for removing criminal penalties for the major production or supply offences of most drugs," it said.

It calls for a review of the Misuse of Drugs Act and drugs classification, which it says has "lost credibility" for many people.

It suggests technical decisions about the classification of individual drugs should be taken by an independent body, with parliamentary oversight.

They're a bunch of idiots that only care about staying in power. They don't want to be the ones to ruffle feathers and put forward a change to drug laws which means nothing changes.

We should be able to vote a law change via ballot to enable change.

There is still misuse of drugs no matter what.
I agree that it should be licenced to maybe reduce the harm but the harm is done anyway.
If no money to feed the habit then users will resort to crime. If regulated perhaps the tax earned could be used to fight the crime but then the crime would stop and the tax would drop as the black market would supply.

The government do not have the answers to human nature.
I have. If you do something bad whilst out of your face on drugs/alcohol then you will be banished from society to live on the Isle of Wight.
Re-offenders will be banished to Amsterdam with the rest of the sort.

UKDPC Publications wrote:

Politicians’ views on drug policy

Among those polled:

Clear majorities of politicians (at least 60%) in each body disagreed with the statement that current policies are effective in tackling the problems caused by illegal drugs. MPs were most likely to think this (77%) compared with 67% of AMs and 60% of MSPs.

Similarly, majorities of politicians felt that it can be difficult to have an objective debate about the best solution because drug policy is such a controversial issue. Here again MPs were most likely to agree with this statement (75% did) compared with 63% of AMs and 57% of MSPs.

At least two thirds of politicians in each body agreed that the process of making policy about illegal drugs should make more use of evidence and research than it currently does. In this case there was less difference between MPs (76% agreed) and MSPs (70%) or AMs (67%).

Only minorities of politicians in each body (between a quarter and a third) support consideration of changes to the drug laws so that possession of small quantities of currently illegal drugs for personal use only is not treated as a criminal offence.

While in Scotland, a majority of MSPs want more control over drug policy (68% do), Welsh Assembly Members are more evenly split on the question (44% agree and 48% disagree). Policy on drug misuse is mainly devolved to the Scottish Parliament and Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies but with some aspects reserved to Westminster, notably in relation to the legislation for the control of drugs.

In general, there was little difference in attitudes to current drug policy between MPs from coalition parties and Labour MPs. Both groups were equally likely to disagree (76%) that current policies are effective in tackling the problems caused by illegal drugs although Labour MPs were more likely to disagree strongly.

In addition Labour MPs were more likely than coalition MPs (83% compared with 69%) to agree that “The process of making policy about illegal drugs in the UK should make more use of evidence and research than it currently does”.

So in a nutshell politicians want more evidence based decision making, but are going to ignore the evidence because its too controversial, even though the current situation isn't working. Confused

the system Holland has is good
its still illegal to possess but if its under 5g that is deemed personal use
any more and you will get arrested and the drugs confiscated and fined / jail depending on the amount

you can have your E's or MDMA tested for purity so you know your not taking bad shit
we had 2 young guys found dead in my town this week which the cops are saying is unexplained
but the word on the street was "Double dunt E's" is the cause, but they are still waiting for Tox screen results

a similar system here would take a large part of the population out of the criminal population
and allow people to get access to drugs if they wish in a controlled manner
and the tax raised (as they WILL tax it) can be used to treat drug issues and health care

THE WAR ON DRUGS! Laughing

Shit, if we knew what we do now about them then, things would have been different.
It's been something like 40 years now and it's still on going. We have a large number of people from that era who repeat the same shite that was just as misguided and ill informed back then. It really is sad we've spent so much money on so called studies and then ignored the results.

I think it was in the 60's in the US. They pumped a chimp full of about 60 high grade spliffs. The poor thing lost brain cells due to lack of oxygen, they claimed it was simply a bad drug. Something as crude and pointless as that, still stands today.
If you watch some of the videos on the build up to the ban on youtube, there are many white folk in suits talking about black people smoking it and creating the devils music. Laughing

People are getting more and more educated on drugs every day. The USA is stepping closer and closer to legalisation of marijuana.

All this because the war on drugs has failed so badly. All we need now is a war on education and maybe the next generation will come out of the system with some knowledge.

Drug use = lower productivity. That myth is what drives those in control, because it's all about the impact on toys for the rich. And don't make the mistake of thinking "toys" means only discrete physical objects like cars and flat-screen TVs etc. It also refers to services and a generally well-ordered society in which to parade ones ego.

IMO make it all legal or keep it all illegal. You can't have wishy-washy grey areas about personal possession.

The time isn't right to make it all legal, and I'm not sure it ever will be, so keep it illegal.

It's amazing they use that myth when they themselves admisitered speed to flight crew during war times, and also to soldiers to help them fight. Sounds like it would be beneficial to civilian work too.

When they can do a test to see if you are fit to drive/use machinery/work like they can with drink, then perhaps and only perhaps it can be in the use of the ordinary man. Until then let the druggies have it.

There is no real place for such stuff in the world for recreation, druggies will come up with all sorts of excuses and peddle off the research that goes in their favour, but they never go one about the research that goes against it other than to rubbish it.

Druggies will say such and such a thing is good for you because this nearly dead person uses it to help get over what ever they have until they die, so if the nearly dead can use it then druggies can use it while jumping up and down at the pub/club. Feeble isn't in it.

I imagine if weed were ever legalised here it'd be made super expensive for the reasoning "so people wont buy it as much" like their logic for putting the price on alcohol up.

And be substantially weaker, arguing it lowers the risk of mental disorders.

So in all you'll end up paying £40 for like 2 grams of weed, not even skunk

most of them "Can't" work because there tablets say don't operate machinery

I smoke drug's and I'm very open about it
I have 3 job's inc running my own PA & lighting company and I function normally I'm not a drain on society in fact I now employ people
and yes I'm proud to be a druggie as you kindly put it

it also takes any criminality out of the situation

Those that want to smoke dope etc do and if careful no harm with the law should come of it.

the only people that care are the politicians and they only care about there image not the matter at hand
the have proved this time and again by rejecting every report in the last 50 years
that consistently says the government are getting it wrong

most people know someone that smokes weed or does pills at the weekend
99% of recreational drug taking causes no harm, its only when a few take it to extremes
or overdose that there is any problem and as for driving while under the influence of drug's
that already exists as a charge just like Alcohol as it should be

The students the go smoking weed etc. for 5.9 years and then make up a report for the commision, saying weed is good , yea , chill , peace man.

I dont do drugs, have no desire to, and am opposed to it, but have yet to be convinced some recreational drugs cause more deaths and social ills than alcohol. Ok the highly addictive ones like heroin and crack excluded. I also dislike smoking, and it is very harmful, but you cant ban things that people choose to do that is harmful to themselves.

It would be interesting to know the costs of drug rehab vs alochol.

The war on drugs costs a fortune. To reduce drug use why not legalise with a very high tax like alochol and tobacco? Then it would a revenue rather than a cost. And that would cut revenue to illegal drug syndicates.

Those of you that choose to do drugs, like smoking, no problem as long as you refrain from doing it in my face or passing it to minors.

The war on drugs clearly doesnt work. It is available to every school kid. It is as ridiculous as the US prohibition which only spawned the mafia.

But I still dont get why people want to do drugs.
