Anyone playing this? It's really good, seems to have all the good points of the old XCOM games done in a modern way, I find I really get attached to the squadies, my first one died the other day, I was well upset!

Didn't realise this had been redone, very cool. I too miss the days of the original on the Amiga, must have raided Cydonia a hundred times over. I'm off to buy it now, although £40 on the Xbox is a bit salty....

I was a bit disapointed at first, it struck me as a bit watered down and soft compared to how vicious the originals were. Then I got a few missions in and it started kicking my arse Laughing Thumbs Up

Whilst I'm not sure it quite dethrones Apocalypse, it's a far more worthy follow up than any of the other worthless attempts that have been done.

This is a new one right? (they're all beginning to sound the same)!

My experience is that it goes from easyish to impossible in the space of one or two missions - have they sorted it out?

Its a take on the original Xcom, i.e land based, starting from scratch, big green globe tracking alien activity, with the same sort of stuff: shoot down ufo's, alien abductions, and trying to keep nations happy etc. The gameplay is turn based, and when an alien abduction occurs you get a choice of which country to go to, with different difficulty levels. you can also save every turn, like the original, which takes a bit of the tension out unfortunately.

Having played for a few hours last night I thought it was good fun, but I suppose it depends what you like. IGN have a good review on it.

I thought the new xcom was going to be an fps for some reason, downloaded the demo the other night and was pleasantly surprised!

May have to aquire the full game, though it was smart from the demo.

However most of my gaming time is taken up with borderlands 2 and guildwars 2 at the mo

Sounds like there's no change there then. I'll fire up the old Amiga emulator for any XCom thrills I think Smile

Didn't aliens already have grenades? They were ridiculous in two sides

I only really played UFO aftershock and Xcom: The two sides which was a community made mod which had multiplayer, it was awesome but got shut down by the official devs because....they were making this game!

Give X-Com Apocalypse a try, once you get over the cityscape instead of a planet deal it's arguably the best of the original series.

As for the difficulty, just slow down and pace your advance over the map, unless it's a terror mission theres no real need to hurry. Consider playing with alternative builds too, I lost 1 somewhat leveled assault last night and that was down to me zerging for live specimens. A defensive build assault backed up with a healing focused support is the first line in not taking big losses all the time.

From the screenshots I've seen, I don't think I've tried that - ta!

One of the problems I found with the newer games is the camera's tendency to follow the height of the landscape - this looks sufficiently old school! Smile

I think they are releasing a FPS 'version' as well next year.

Apocalypse was a good game, but this one is much more like the original version with far better graphics. Obviously.

There is a multiplayer, but I haven't looked at it.

Gameplay beats graphics for me, I just haven't liked the more recent versions.

Completed on normal level. Very short game.... Maybe it's nostalgia, but the original seemed to take a long time to finish. This does not.

the main problem/difference with the new xcom is it just dont feel as oppresive or on a knife edge as much as the original, and the bugs.... but as a multiplayer squad vs squad its not too shabby.

but if you liked the original, then this is worth a look at, just wait for a steam sale, its not worth full price imo.

I set my kitchen and subsequently myself on fire due to playing the original XCOM obsessively. Thumbs Up

But they can sod off it's been released with bugs. All of the rip offs have crashed harder than a sweaty European country's economy, and "We'll fix it later" isn't good enough.

I'll catch it when it's sorted, and budget.

Got addicted and swept through story mode in 5 days, ( not as long as i'd hoped )

Very good, imo, hoping to take some balls and got for impossible iron man, or at least classic iron man.

It's alot more 'maintstream' friendly as the older ones are ALOT more complicated i found. Smile

All in all, A decent tactical strategy!

And then comes the mind rape...

Power armour, laser pistols and grenades = far less friendly fire snafus.

Right, I'm off to break my alliances in Master of Orion now that I've got "protective" bomber fleets hovering over most of their worlds. Wink

The psi attacks are kicking in! Got my psi labs built on the 3rd of the month (as usual it seems) so 2 whole months to wait until results.

Bah! Smile

Good tips Rog, the AI doesn't touch grenades if not from their own units.
