So....kinda set myself on getting a CBR250....almost bought one today but decided to hold fire and get some insurance quotes....

Fully comp it was £335

Then decided to see how much a 650cc ER6-F would cost....just out of interest...and to my amazement it was significantly cheaper at just £275.

It just doesnt make sense?

Both are faired bikes, both are sporty.....but why oh why is the 650cc one significantly cheaper?

May as well go for the er6f cos what ill lose in mpg ill claw back in insurance.

Rant over... Shocked

Are we talking about the CBR250 of the 90's? The 19k RPM screamer?

Yes, you may aswell go for the er6!

It won't get boring as quick, and with the new laws I can't see 250's having amazing re-sale value.

I'd only get one if you wanted MPG for commuting, but even then.. nice to have a bit of fun!

Thumbs Up

Someone doesn't sit down and look at your case individually, they just have a set of policies with various conditions that they can stick you on. they take your details then search their database to find which is the cheapest one they can offer you. So given the bike and the type of people who ride it your age especially it might be unsuitable for lots of their policies. But change the bike to one with a track record of fewer claims and you can get a better policy price.
Try getting insurance on a 1.2 litre car @ 17, you won't see much change from £3k because so many get crashed. But a friend of mine insured a big old mercedes at 18 for about £500 just cause the only people who ever drive them are retired bank managers Laughing

Even the insurance seem to be working out that you don't need a 250.

Would have cost me £800 to insure a Ninja 250 in 2008.
Cost me £150 for a CB400SF
£157 for an SV.

insurance is very weird. To insure me on a hyosung gt 125 it is £670, to insure me on a '96 GSXR 1100 it is £400, and that was when I was 18.

The more insurers try to get smart, the crazier they appear.

Brought to you by the same industry that won't give pillion cover on a Crosstourer because it's a "sportsbike", and says "You fitted an alarm? That's a modification, let's just multiply your quote by five."

Best you can do is to try and play the game. If they want you to get an ER6, maybe you should listen. Wink

Just be happy that you are getting such low prices, 21 1year ncb and a bros would be £450 tp. Cg125 is still £800 for fc .. insurance company wanted £750 just for tp.

If I had quotes like that I would be laughing.

Whenever I tried that I always got astronomical quotes, and I tried an old Merc too (one that would run on veggie).

Insurance can be crazy though... through the comparison sites, it was £120 for my CB500. And an extra £250 if I wanted to add my 125cc to the policy... could've insured it in its own right for £150 but that seemed stupid so I sold it. Kinda regret that now though. A cheap little bike that I didn't mind dropping in winter would've been ace.

Just bought a new car, adding my partner who has 9 points on his license plus 2 accidents lowered my premium by £100.

Yet adding my mum to the policy only lowers it by £15, she has been driving forever no points and no claims.

I really don't get that............

The prices i quoted were for Comp...for TPFT it was £162 on the 250cbr and £99 on the ER6F.....one of the benefits of being 39 i guess. Ive got no ncb either, if i had 5 years no claims theyd be almost giving it away

Pricing algorithms are very complex

https://countryantiquefurniture.co.uk/productimages/Tombola1.jpg

Unfortunately common sense underwriting went out the window when customers wouldn't pay for it. Computerise everything, take all of your data and send it to an actuary who'll come back with a rating engine that has nonsensical quirks in it, but you've cut all the front line underwriting staff now so no-body's going to be any help on the other end of the phone even if you do feel like challenging it.

Sitting down with a developer last week I heard one of the guys in the pricing team ask 'what's Day One?' - this guy gets paid more than me most likely and doesn't understand basic principles of insurance.

Yeah I found this as well when I look for insurance....

For a '98 ZXR400 i'd have to pay £375, but for my '93 KLE500 it's £98.

Whatever algorithm they're using, it sure doesn't seem to work by any logic I know of....

I swapped my 1.3 Ka for a 1.8 Astra SRi and my quotes went down by about £200 Laughing Oh insurance, you so crazy.

The fact I could insure a CBR600F for £150, but the car cost me about a grand always used to puzzle me. The bike was more valuable, more nickable and far quicker.

Perhaps because they know that your partner has to be careful else he'll lose his licence? Mr. Green
