PostPosted: 00:10 - 21 Oct 2012    Post subject: IOW Test Centre...I PASSED!! Reply with quote

For my fifth attempt at Mod 2, I decided to get away from Farnborough and try somewhere else, a slot came up at Newport, Isle of Wight, so booked it a couple of hours ago.

It'll cost about £20 for the ferry which I can live with, plus I'll have about 2 hours of practice riding down the A3 and into Portsmouth at rush hour Wink

Has anyone else had any experience of this test centre, from what I gather it's a bit of a one-man operation, but I can't really tell where it is?

All that google maps comes up with is a row of houses Thinking
if anybody can help me out that would be very much appreciated Karma Thumbs Up

Has anyone done their test there, and can give me some tips? Thanks in advance Karma

The guy who runs it is a right bastard I hear, had so many complaints about him they moved him to IOW to get him off the mainland.

He fails people for no reason at all if he doesn't like the look of you its instant fail. The dsa didn't want to fire him because it would cost them too much in redundancy etc.

im joking btw

Don't forget to pull your clutch in and quietly coast past the ox drawn wagons or the Hippies that never made it off the island after the Festival.

Laughing

Is that the result you wanted TomGT? I say take an extra £100 and accidentally drop it next to him if he's this unprofessional!

I hope you noted the small print Laughing

Just ride safely and you'll be fine. But remember the DSA is the DSA no matter where they are, it's all one standard. They won't be any easier and forgiving because it's on a quiet little island.

Unless of course they are the exception? Very Happy

Good luck though

As I understand it the tests are run by the Lee-On-The-Solent examiners. Once they have enough testees ( Wink ) available they go over and do the tests. If this is the case then they are fine. I have Carol for my Mod 1 and Gary for my Mod 2 and both were fine and fair.

Good luck.

I had the guys from Lee on Solent. Cant remember the name of the guy that took me for mod 1 but he was from Northern Ireland. For mod 2, I failed twice and then Carol passed me.

So today was the big day, left the house at about half five

https://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j330/mastergallagher/DSC_0171.jpg

Headed to Farnham, onto the A31, stopped for fag briefly at the Bordon Tesco before heading on to the A3, staying on the actual A3 and avoiding the A3M.

https://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j330/mastergallagher/DSC_0172.jpg

Got to the ferry terminal for about ten past seven, grabbed a coffee before boarding for my 8 o'clock sailing.

Arrived in Newport, had time for a quick lunch at Morrisons before heading to the test centre. Had an examiner called Brian (very Irish) took a varied route around the ring road, country nsl's and a couple of housing estates. Nearly failed the eyesight test but he just said "I'll accept that" Very Happy

Got separated a couple of times where I made it through lights and he couldn't, every time he asked he to pull up he told me not to worry about the yellow lines. Got back, and he told me to park in the public car park next door.

Got back inside and he asked if I'd like my license automatically posted to me Shocked

I passed, with a clean sheet!

Had a bit of a chat about my mod 2 fails and he said that they were pretty anal things to fail me for, so could be worth appealing Confused

A local even came out to wish me well Smile

https://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j330/mastergallagher/DSC_0180.jpg

Decided to head out to the Needles before my return sailing at 1300, following signs to Yarmouth when I accidentally stumbled upon Dave Death motorcycles, chatted to the owner before moving on. Took the B3401 out west, an absolutely stunning road by all acounts, but as I neared the needles time constraints and the dangerous sidewinds prompted me to return home Sad

Managed to get back to Newport ok, but there are no signs back to Fishbourne or the ferry terminal, ending up doing a bit of guesswork, and arrived at the port at 1245, but still managed to get the 1300 sailing Very Happy

They even chocked the bike this time Cool

https://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j330/mastergallagher/DSC_0182.jpg

Got back to the mainland, and headed home via the A3M this time, me and a mate have already decided to take the 400's over next summer Wink[/img]

On the way over they didn't bother, but on the way back I heard one of the crew shouting for some. Wish I had parked at the front, trying to rotate the bike sideways with that much space is a complete cunt.

Worst of all, I nearly got flattened by an arctic lorry! He was coming up behind me, after I'd rotated the bike, and he kept going until I hit the horn realising I was in his front blind spot!

They really should have someone watching them forward Mad

One question - did the examiner say anything with regards to not having a front 'L' plate?

Nice one on the pass though, bet you had a brilliant day riding.

Just for the future encase you go again... on a bike you can really go on whatever ferry you like. Don't worry about what time your ticket says Smile
