Just thinking of what'd make a decent learner/commuter 125 and a few ideas came to mind.

1.
Large frame for road presence. Frame capable of 250/400 engine too. Thinking Varadero or Hysoung Comet for inspiration.

2.
Built in crash bars. Indicators not part of the plastics. Tank not to be an impact point if dropped/slid.
It's a learner 125, it is going to be dropped. So why increase the cost of repair and getting replacement plastics.

3.
Did thing shaft drive for maintenance but not really practical on 125.
So if it uses a chain then make it a fully enclosed guard like the old CG. This would mean chain runs in a bit of an oil bath so helps keep crud off it and helps longer life.
Failing that then look at using a belt, like an old BMW F650 model.

4.
Screen and hand guard protection. Aids to riding comfort. Possibly heated grips as factory fit option for the commuter market.

5.
Luggage fitments as standard, again for the commuter market. So that's rack for top box and maybe points for panniers.

6.
A more upright riding position. Thinking CG, YBR and Varadero for inspiration. Suits commuter market and makes it an easier learner bike for negotiating/filtering in traffic.
However sporty appears to sell so maybe faired option like the Hyosung Comet GT125 and the GT125R variants.

As said just some thoughts.
Be interested in the ideas and thoughts of others.

Thumbs Up

well, the downside to one of your points,

a larger frame = more weight which reduces the top speed.

probably not by much but these 125 engines dont have much....gumpf.

If i were designing a 125 i'd take something like a ybr or CG then make it look like an R6 / VFR. That way it'd be cheap to buy and look fast. Laughing

What you're suggesting sounds awfully practical.

I would make something like the yzf125r but much cheaper if I could.

17 - ~23 year old's would buy it.

BOOM. profit.

Congratulations. You've just built a hugely heavy 12bhp 125. Its top speed will be approximately 17mph.

No bonus.

Hi

There are plenty of 125 bikes that people can buy with their heads rather than their hearts. Many buy with their hearts though.

All the best

If it was me, I would make it possible for it to be de-restricted. So that once your test was passed you wouldn't have to be in such a rush to sell it.

Hmmm.. upright riding position, presence of a bigger bike, decent handling like a sports bike, four stroke ecconomy, but some screaming little engine that can deliver a bit of two-stroke like fun..... convenience of an electric start? Good brakes?

You have just described that 1982 Honda CB125 'Super-Dream'...

Add hand-guards, crash-bars, luggage rack, top box & heated grips....

You have just described Snowie's 'Pup'! Shocked

https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/XX-Forum%20Posts/101_0043.jpg

Seriousely; when Honda designed the '82 125 Super-Dream, they set them selves a tough remit. They expected it to sell in the numbers the old 250N did, but they wanted to address the critics that said that the 250 was a 'bit lardy', and take the two-stroke sports bikes on head to head on performance.

They gave it state of the art monoshock rear suspension; advanced twin piston front brake, and that little twin pot four stroke engine, packing 12,000rpm two-stroke power, but four stroke mid-range with twin pot smoothness...... electric start and 12v electrics put it technically ahead of most of the competition, but on the road, it was as close as you could get to the universal Learner-Bike, ofering as much of everythiung any-one could want.

ONE big problem with it. It was too expensive.

They were flogging surplus stock for four years after the thing went out of serial production!

Bottom line though is, that if there was no incentive to buy a 125 from licencing laws, few would bother to either make them, or buy them.

Costs damn near as much to make a bike, irrespective of how mig the pistons are........

Meanwhile; shaft drive 125? Yamaha Town-Mate. Think that they also used the same transmission in the PW50 & PW80. Belt Drive? Take your pick from any of the variator scooters out there.

But in the spirit of the Fantacy Legue: If I were to design a 125?

A 'lightweight' Sachs style trellis frame, around an air-cooled reed-valve two-stroke single, with posi-lube for user freindliness. Simple cantilever mono-shock rear suspension, or traditional twin-shocks. Disc front brake. 12v Electrics, and an all-up weight under 100Kg, but full quota of 14.5bhp.

Could then be dressed out as Commuter, Sports-bike, cafe racer, flat-tracker, motard, or trail bike with different 'cloths'.

FTFY Laughing

My point was that 17 year olds don't give a fly shit-fuck about it being shaft drive, practical or having road presence, they don't even want it to be that fast, they just want it to be the fastest looking bike they can afford. Give them the choice between a special one off cg that makes 18bhp, or a one off 125cc GSXR we all know what they'll pick Laughing

Thinking I guess they're the spoilt ones with rich parents to (a) buy the bike and (b) pay the insurance. Wonder what poorer parents, training schools or your older commuters would choose?

Give me a CG or YBR lookalike (and 110kg or so weight) that makes 30+ hp at lowish revs and now we're talking. I like sleeper-ish vehicles (my SH300 is almost indistinguishable from a SH125 but 100% more power). Don't particularly care for top speed - if it's limited to 90mph for frame safety that's enough - but I do want piles of acceleration at traffic light / urban speeds. But not something that looks like a supermoto (i.e. impossible to leave unattended).

The problem I see here is that you're making an even more expensive but boring looking comet.
People seem to buy the comet purely because it's big/sporty. Male it overly utilitarian and I doubt enough will be asking bank of daddy.

Also, a big heavy bike is a bad idea for a lot of new riders, as well as a lot of people generally Smile.

For selling bikes - I'd tend to agree with Marjay. I've actually wondered if there's any business in taking an r6 with a blown engine and sticking a 50/125cc engine in there. Probably weigh no more than a Comet, but be 'better' in many way.
Of course, still end up pretty expensive for the time/money used; especially considering just taking the old bike apart and selling the parts.

true that.. im actually whats in the above... if i wanted speed i would have gone for the rs... but the yzf r125 just looks the 5ex and moves at a very good pace in city traffic.

btw the first thing i ever tried search for on auto trader bikes was a gsxr 125cc, i was very Sad when i found out it never existed

I've often thought that an MZ RT 125 would make an excellent commuter, regardless of whether you are 17 or not.

CG style bike, but massively updated with decent size tires, brakes, a 15hp (always pisses me off when you are limited to 14.6hp but no one bothers making an engine with more than 11 Rolling Eyes ) DOHC liquid cooled motor with a 6 speed 'box.

https://img12.imageshack.us/img12/5516/mzrtpt1.jpg

I had an MZ SM 125 (same running gear in a supermoto frame) and it was awesome.

True, but those without the parents doing that are probably not going to buying a new bike anyway. Cost of the consumables, tyres, etc, is nominal compared to the cost of depreciation.

The older commuters already have GG125s and YBR125s and probably don't care too much about how it looks.

All the best
