Best treat each one as seems best at the time.
I find the left side often gets quite gravelly and can contain bits of metal that will give you a puncture.
For now follow instructor's advice.

Is he giving you his opinion, or telling you what the local examiners tend to expect?

If it's the former case, pfft. Ride in the gutter? Not in this life, or the next.

If it's the latter, well, ask him to confirm that.

Have only recently done my CBT, but we were told to stay to the right of the humps UNLESS the situation dictates otherwise i.e. oncoming traffic. However, if there is a central traffic island (or some other barrier that offers protection against oncoming traffic) then it is still ok.

As others have said, we were advised that the left is unwise becasue a) gives less time to react if a pedestrian steps out and b) the road surface is often poorer there.

As above - it wastes a lot of time, and nothing to go wrong.

Doesn't matter what the examiner expects, you wont fail for it.

Post - test - whizz around them to your hearts content!

I always go to the right of them unless there's oncoming traffic near it.

But yeah on the test maybe go over them slowly to waste a bit of time?

I always try and head for the right hand side unless traffic is coming opposite way Wink I was told, mirror check for going to the left or shoulder check for going right.

Particularly arsey examiner might mark you down for not making progress. I'd go right and make sure to reduce speed, lifesaver and of course not head directly at traffic.

Hit them as hard as you can and try to pull an air stunt?

Might give you bonus points depending on your landing.

But yeah didn't think about the 'making progress' thing but surely they can't for speedbumps seeing as that's the purpose of speedbumps?

I was told not to bother. its not like anyone will overtake you on a speedbump...

I wouldn't put it past some drivers...

Roads usually camber left so the crud works its way left. Plus there's the pedestrian issue. Hence I usually go right to avoid them unless oncoming traffic makes it unwise.

As long as you do your obs and blatantly don't choose a risky route over a safe one, it should be OK to go either way on test.

You wont get marked down for going over a speedbump....cars dont get marked down for going over them and some speeebumps cover the whole width of the road so do you get marked down for that even though you cant help it?

This is in the same 'old wives tale' bracket as the filtering issue.....has anyone ever been marked down for 1) going over a speedbump or 2) not filtering? Almost definitely not.......

If you ask me you are putting yourself at risk of needless negative marks by both filtering AND swerving round speedbumps. With speeebumps its all well and good going round them when nobody is coming the other way....but what happens if a bus is coming the other way? Or a cyclist is riding on the inside?...youre having to make needless decisions and if the road conditions/ traffic changes suddenly, you could find yourself picking up needless minors or even worse if you commit to going around the bump and someone pulls out a sideroad coming the other way.

You just have to play the game for the test. Obviously once you pass you go round them as we all do, but imho its not worth trying to be smart and potentially give the examiner something to fail you on.

From the horses mouth:

Quote:
153

Traffic-calming measures. On some roads there are features such as road humps, chicanes and narrowings which are intended to slow you down. When you approach these features reduce your speed.

Seems sensible enough.

Quote:
Allow cyclists and motorcyclists room to pass through them.

Implies you can use the centre to pass through them.

Quote:
Maintain a reduced speed along the whole of the stretch of road within the calming measures.

On my test I did kept at 20-25 in a 30 in a traffic calming zone. I went over the speed bumps, didn't need to brake between them (just rolled off the throttle a bit) and no issues at all. Aside from mirror checks before slowing down, there was no need to do constant lifesavers when moving out and back in and there was no risk of conflicting with other traffic.

Your instructor probably doesn't know his left from right, they are usually thick fuckers.

If the road is clear then always go to the right of the bump (remember observation) even if that means crossing the white line. Unless its a solid line then don't cross those.

Only go kirb side (left) if its safe IE: no pedestrians and you don't have to scrape the kirb to make it round the hump.

The other thing to remember is that there is nothing to stop you slowing down and riding over the humps.

Thumbs Up

Doesn't work. I blew a fork seal hitting one of those fecking things.

Another biker might. I've used the opposite side of the road to get past cars going over these humps before. Cars around here go stupidly slow over them, which is slightly annoying when I don't have to slow down. Smile

---------------------------

In the real world I always go to the right of the hump unless:
a) there's an oncoming car
b) the hump is on a blind corner and I can't see far enough around the corner to go in the middle of the road
In those situations I go around to the left

---------------------------

On my test I didn't see any of those style humps.

I did see normal speed bumps, for which I activated by brake lights always (even if I didn't actually intend to slow down), just for show to the examiner.

I wouldn't put it past some drivers...

Especially not a little old lady in her Micra (or something like that anyway!!)
It was on a fairly straight (20 limit) road near a school and she went flying merrily past me! (I wasn't dawdling either Shocked )
