Hi

I had a meeting a few weeks back with the managers of our team, all sort of 40+ women. (NHS)
Since working for them, they often make offhand comments about men "It's because they're blokes, because a man did it, you can tell a bloke designed this"

It got me thinking, have we flipmoded? Or is it just the public sector? Or is it just the NHS?

It seems everywhere i've worked in the NHS over the last 2-3 years has been a female manager and very matriarchal.

In the meeting the business manager (our big boss) said something like
"it's because you're a man" to which I said something like
"har har har" in a cocky sarcastic way as it quite pissed me off for some reason.
Then another one of them who was spurred on by this, after we had had our tea and coffee was like
"make sure you wash your cups up" then someone else was like "yeah ha especially you two" pointing her empty cup at me and the only other guy then said condescendingly "haha go and wash this up" as a joke obviously, but still.

Now, normally this wouldn't bother me at all. In fact it didn't bother me that much anyway as it happened weeks ago, but it's the principal.

If I was to say something like "Haha you're a woman go and wash my cup" i'd be looking at a disciplinary.

So it got me thinking.. these are women that HAVE grew up in a male dominated world, where women had to address their seniors by 'Mr' or 'Sir' and wouldn't ever be in positions of power, so now they seem to have it in for men and, just as men did in those situations, surrounded by other men with few women in their team.

So do you think we've flipmoded or is it just the NHS?

Plus we've got women de-feminizing themselves, cutting their hair off and acting like blokes, fine if it was for any other reason other than to make a point. I'm all for equality between sexes but there isn't, it's gone the other way entirely.

Now I get told they can't employ anyone permanently (i'm bank staff despite being here for over a year now) then suddenly there's two new members of staff, permanent, women.

They hired another receptionist at my place too that's never even used microsoft office, I mean da fuq do they ask them at the interviews?

Place is pissing me off a bit, you can't say anything to these women without them making drama and getting arsey about it, I asked one to call me Jordan not Jordon and she replied something like "Ooh be careful when correcting people" despite me saying not much more than "It's Jordan not Jordon please Smile" Gay smiley face included

Men will group with men, women with women, equality as that by the prescribed definition is a load of tosh as we are simply not equal, but equality of respect is possible and should be enforced. To be honest you shouldn't tolerate it if you feel you are being ridiculed.

As a side not, my missus works in a retail outlet, all employees are female, males dont seem to stick it, and from what she tells me about her colleagues I wouldn't want to work for them and I certainly wouldn't want to employ them, incessant mind games and backstabbing.

I work in a predominantly male oriented role and I find the exact same but it is called banter and fun and doesn't seem to have pure nastiness behind it, at least for the majority of the time.

I did like the design comment though, typical response of the uneducated, and it is certainly unisex reply, although in your instance they emphasise the sex of the designer, in mine it's usually along the lines of "Can tell the fuckers who design it dont have to maintain it" Laughing

I think that we can clearly deduct that women can't banter without making it overly sexist Razz

To be perfectly honest though, I tend to agree with sload on this one.
If it bugs you this much, fill a complaint. Or, find equally harsh, borderline sexist comment to answer Wink

It's pretty endemic in the NHS given that a lot of the now managers rose through the ranks of a female dominated workforce. The remarks used to get a bit on my tits, but nowadays I frankly couldn't give a toss.

I tend to fight fire with fire, and suggest that too much oestrogen is the reason that they can't organise piss ups in breweries, and that the only reason they ask me to do stuff is cos only a bloke can do it properly Wink

I think it's indeed horrible to work for women-managers.
In my last role I worked with females only, including 2 women-managers. A drama... Sick

I worked for a few female managers before, in different job roles. I think female managers love to control everything a bit more than males, I suppose they like to be a second mum and they are far to serious...

I now work mainly with men and that is so much better! Much more laid back and relaxed Very Happy

This times a bajillion. They are effectively paid to gossip.

Its certainly a public sector thing. I'm a civil servant (desperately trying to get out, I might add) and my department is well over 60% female. In fact, when I first joined my line management chain all the way up from local management to the Chief Executive were all women.

I've sometimes wondered what an office job would be like, I've never met a woman who does the same job as me.

The only insight I have had is an early series of the apprentice, women really do not like each other do they? Laughing

Oh and alpha, HR is for burds and pooftahs Cool

Heard on the radio today an idea of positive discrimination to bring the female quota of company board members to a minimum 40%

They did it in Norway a few years back

Right. In this world there are nice people and nasty people, good managers and shit managers etc. and blah...

Some women are nice and non-sexist, some are not. Some men are nice and non-sexist. Some are not.

What really pisses me off is people who stereotype all women and men into little boxes. People who expect me to behave in a certain way because I am a middle-aged woman, people who think they have to behave in a certain way because of their age, gender, class etc. People who start sentences with "All women are..." or "All men are..."

Vive (and respect) la difference!

I don't like working for female managers, either.
I prefer working for men.

I actually disagree about women loving to control everything, though. What it is, is that they need to be seen to be in charge cos they have been given this "big" job. BUT they hate being disliked, so they veer between bossy control freaks, and wanting to be everybody's mates/mother.

I find it generally tiresome that, having been on the receiving end of sexist remarks for years and years, and struggled to get out from under that yoke, women now seem to have put the boot on the other foot and are kicking men with it.

I get embarrassed when I see women behaving the way the OP says. It makes me cringe. If you are going to manage, then fucking-well manage (male or female) and don't demean the staff in front of colleagues.

I work with a load of blokes, every now and again the older ones forget that Im employed as their equal and get arsey if I dont rush off like a poppet to fax something or copy something for them if I happen to get some office time into my schedule. I dont get offended, I just tell them to fuck off and do it themselves, you can be a bit sensitive young alpha Wink

Funny how they still play the dizzy tart card when they fuck up their computers though...

Actual phone conversation from yesterday:

(Office full of women who think they're high-flying business executives or something. Dizzy Tart had crashed her client application connected to our server.)

bazza: OK, I need you to save whatever you're doing and reboot your PC.

Dizzy Tart: How do I do that?

b: The same way as you always do, whatever that is.

DT: Er, let me put you on hold.

<5 minute pause>

DT: Ok. I've done that.

b: Has the PC shut down?

DT: I think so.

b: Right, turn it back on now.

DT: OK, I pressed the button then the screen went green and now it's orange.

b: That doesn't sound right. Turn it off again.

DT: It's off now.

b: Turn it back on now.

DT: It went green for a few seconds and now it's orange.

b: Did you see any writing on the screen before it changed colour?

DT: No, it stayed black.

b: Black? You told me it went green and orange. Hang on a minute - you're turning the monitor on and off and telling me the colour of the light aren't you?

DT: Well that's the PC isn't it?

b: OK, look - get someone to turn your PC back on for you and ask them to call me only if you're still having the problem that restarting your PC should have solved.

On reflection, I don't think she was playing the Dizzy Tart card at all...

Hi

Maybe I am lucky, but of all the female bosses I have had only one wasn't decent to work for (and even with them they were not that bad), while by far the worst manager I have ever had to put up with was a bloke. However this is working in IT, and all of these female managers were pretty bright and with half decent technical skills.

All the best

Keith

It's a bit different for me because I work in the security industry. We don't really have many females working with us.

The women that I've worked with have always been great. I've never seen them shy away from trouble and most have been more game than the men.

Alpha, people will treat you in the way that you allow yourself to be treated. If your boss says something that you don't like, don't just laugh it off. Pull her on it. You'll find she won't make the same mistake again, especially if you do it in front of people. Just because she might be your boss doesn't make her better than you and it certainly doesn't give her the right to treat you like a dickhead.

There are some women who think the way to defeat misogynistic attitudes is to become insufferable misandrists. The attitude in my experience is more prevelent among older women, working in admin jobs. Among the younger crowd there seems to be a far more egalitarian attitude, in offices at least.

I work security at the mo and in that industry women are fairly rare.

The only time I have encountered out and out anti male attitudes was in family court.

You'd have liked my ex employer. Muslim family business, women were "encouraged" to wear long sleeves, although I think I glimpsed an ankle once. The 'operations' staff (the family) got their lunches brought to them in the boardroom by the admin poppets. I strongly suspect that it was cut up for them as well. Thumbs Up
