ok .. being 46 and just driving a 125 ..
with all this talk of new laws.. do i have to take some kind of test or will the cbt thing still do ?

125's cheap cheerfull... insurence+cbt =£120 plus fuel a yr to run .. Smile

Even with the law changes, the rules for the CBT don't change.

So to ride a geared 125, you only need to complete the CBT on a geared 125 bike, then you'll be set to go.

You can do it on an automatic 125, even a 50. It doesn't matter.

The CBT 'thing' has never 'done'. and we RIDE bikes we dont DRIVE them!

Riding on L's under provisional entitlement, the provision being you intend to take the fucking tests and get a full licence.

Note its a FULL licence not a 'big bike' licence. you can ride a 125 on a FULL licence just as legitimately as you can ride any other size of bike.

Under existing rules or new rules, is you dont want a full any size bike licence you can elect to test for an A1 125 'only' licence, but thats your call; costs the same and is the same excersises either way.

But take the fucking tests, earn your road room and dump the L-Plates... they are for LEARNERS not people wanting to pranny around for ever and a day, thinking that its 'OK' because little bikes are cheap, and by some dint of logic not that dangerous or need a proven standard of rider competence, because, well..... they are only little, aren't they? Taxi's buses, myopic old duffers in micras WILL see you Shocked , and think "Oh Cutesey lidduw motie-byke! I'll wait for a big one to come along and knock HIM off instead!" Dont they?!?!?

Tests are £121.50 for therory/hazard, & both mods; you can self book and take them on your own bike. No need to do a course, let alone an intensive DAS course.
If you aren't competant enough to pass them, then question whether you are safe enough to be riding at all.
Get the tests booked now and out the way before January, you save not only repeat CBT fees, but also get a full a>25Kw licence that automatically upgrades to a full unrestricted A merely holding it two years.
No expensive training or test courses, or anything from 3rd directive laws coming January. There's still time to do it.

Agreed!

Just get it done. The CBT is a route to a full licence, the idea was not to have people riding unsupervised on L plates for 2 years then redoing the CBT.

If you have the basic machine control skills then you can pass.

Who says ? Nothing in the legislation suggests it is a route anywhere.

The idea of the CBT was to ensure that people were not riding without even basics of bike control and theory in an effort to reduce accidents amongst younger people. I did one of the first CBT courses, and at no point was there a suggestion that I should get a full licence, and no one cared if I did a CBT every three (as it was at the time) years .

I agree with Swampy. (no surprise really I guess)

The CBT is what it is. Basic training and the only real requirement you need to be able to ride a bike on our fair highways.

The thing is. While many people do the CBT every 2 years and are happy with that, it does make more economical sense to do the full test within the first 2 years of the CBT rather than having to pay out and stay on L plates.

To the OP. I would recommend doing the full test rather than stay on L plates because it costs pretty much the same as renewing a CBT in 2 years time and its something that, providing you pass and dont then lose your license, you only have to go through the rigmarole only once.

Not all 125's are limited to 15bhp some have a lot more and as you can do a test on a 125 for restricted license, there is no point to just restrict yourself encase you want to get a better bike in the future and he changes his mind.

Actually the DSA say so, we were told to make this clear when I went through cardington and all instructors should tell trainees this when they do a course.

Do the tests if you can, £120 for all the tests = unlimited riding and the choice to upgrade should you wanna,

also, CBT every 2 years is £90 right? so thats £45 a year you're paying for it, 4 years = costing you more then just doing your tests. and getting it done with
