BCF Beaters and Pickers Up?

Anyone here partake in a spot of Beating or Picking up?

I know these terms are open to misinterpretations, we may discover a hidden side to some members!

I'm working on a rough shoot this Saturday with my youngest Spaniel, Holly.

At a Syndicate shoot picking up on the 7th.

If anyone local to Warwickshire is interested in Beating (not a beating, although i'm sure that could be arranged) extra beaters wouldn't be turned away, just bring your boots that are made for walking. We've got alot of distance to cover! Shoot is in Henley in Arden (near Stratford upon Avon).


Any anti's who pester me over this will be introduced to Badgers.

Used to do a bit of beating on a shoot in the Lake District, sadly not had time to go for about 3 years. Cracking way to spend a day.

Used to beat one/shoot one on our syndicate but we lost our land last year Must get back in to it really, because as said above - it is a great way to spend a day!

Used to do it sometimes, the guns were usually very generous with 'tips' which often came to more than you were paid.
Plus it is a good sociable day out getting to see wild places you never knew existed.

Did it for a bit when i was a lad, was a nice little earner. If i remember rightly i used to get paid £30 for the day, but quite often got double that in tips aswell.

Not bad for a 16 yr old.

Beating = Walking in lines to scare wildlife in to the sky and towards gunmen who then wound or kill them. Is it called beating because any animals left in agony on the ground are finished off by beating?

Guy I worked with used to beat a lot and got shot by an idiot. He was quite far away but the pellets still went under his skin.

Can I be introduced to your badger?

I'm all for hunting to eat, or culling to protect livestock etc. but killing animals for fun is pretty psychotic imo

Although i'd probably love it if I did it for a while, guns are fun and life is short

9 times out of 10 the birds go off to local restaurants, hotels and butchers - as well as some being taken home by the guns and beaters.

In fact I've NEVER heard of a shoot or know anyone who has been on a shoot where the bag gets dumped.

When picking up you're more in danger of getting hit by a falling pheasant than shot.


I have in the past been on commercial shoots where the guns were Arabs, as a female beater I wasn't allowed to look at them when we reached the end of the beating line, all female pickers up were also sent home if they didn't want ot beat, we got treated like shit, had to wait for 3 hours while the arabs had a meal in the house while we stood in the cold. Shite, not what shooting should be.


Any locals to Henley in Arden fancy a day walking on private land with full permission with their well behaved dogs off lead?
