Hi there,

I have recently just passed my Mod 2 (Goodbye 'L' plates Very Happy ) and I want to make the bike insurance a bit more bearable so what would be the best course to endure on?

Also, anymore tips on saving on bike insurance would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Seth

Can I direct you to this - ROSPA or IAM thread.

Rospa is harder, both to find someone to do the test with and the test itself. You also need to renew the qualification periodically. IAM is easier to find a club but they can be a bit cliquey.

Both Rospa and IAM should be recognised by insurance. The Rospa one IMO should give greater discount but as it is insurance you may as well toss a coin.

On some insurance sites they put the BikeSafe scheme as an advanced qualification option choice. Whether that gives you much of a discount I can't tell (it's insurance so IMO just a random number generator, you can get a different quote on a different day for the same info Rolling Eyes ).

You can maybe see about any local scheme close to you.

Hope this help to make it as clear as mud Thumbs Up

Sounds like a lot of effort in order to gain an additional certificate.

Yea I think that is going to be my best bet whereas the ones you have noted seem a bit more higher experienced than I was looking for. They seem to be for instructors or something Confused lol.
Do you have any knowledge of the police advanced riding course?

Both RoSPA and IAM are for normal bikers. They do higher ones for instructors though.

The IAM is ok for beginners. The RoSPA Gold is the closest qualification a non-police person can get to the police qualification (I hesitate to say civilian as the police are civilians too, believe it or not). I think BikeSafe will have finished for this year but if you can get on a course that's also a good introduction.

As reading I suggest you get Motorcycle Roadcraft (via amazon, eBay, library, bookshop, whatever).

Okay well I shall be on the look out for those next year then seeing as the biking season for me is almost over Sad But thanks for your help Smile
Another quick question, do you know what these courses will involve?

You can let the insurance run its course - or transfer to a winter hack 500 - then get the bike you want in April -

Get a well maintained hack, buy lots of fuel and learn skills in poor weather - stand you in great sted over dropping a newer bike - wiser move mate.

Idea Thumbs Up

You need to let the insurance run for the full term to get the NCB. Build up separate on bike and car is best. Also if you cancel early you'll get stung for cancellation charges, you could end up giving them money so not worth it.

Plus point is if sell bike early and buyer (or a friend of his/her) has a ride any other bike if insured clause already then they can ride it away still on your insurance without breaking the law.

Probably not. Check the small print on your insurance policy or ring them up and ask.

Yes, transfer cover, get one years NCB in april - get nice bike for summer ..

From r125 to frapping the shit out of a 500 in winter, will be FUN.

Get one with decent tyres and crash bungs, wear your gear ..

Come summer when you have your new bike, you will be DEFO glad of what you did from now till then on a cb 500 - hornet etc ...

Should be RoSPA Gold. Probably won't be though.

I can't recall ever seeing an option for advanced training on comparison websites, so you'll have to do a lot of clicking to find out.

What I can tell you is that eBike hilariously offered me the same tiny discount for RoSPA, IAM or (1 day!) BikeSafe. I didn't even bother listing BikeSafe (which I've done) since it's just one more thing for them to demand evidence of.

So basically, there really is not much point of me doing them unless I really needed the help. The best thing to do for my insurance is just get experience then, by the looks of things Very Happy Which I wont complain about Wink

If you only want to do a course to lower your insurance then my advice would be not to bother.

Only a small percentage of insurers offer any wortwhile discount for advanced motoring courses. And youll probably find that those that will probably arent competitive on your particular circumstances. So you may get a 10% discount with 'X' insurance company but find that 'Y' insurance company is still cheaper even though they dont give a discount for the advanced course.

The only way youll know is to run a quote through GoCompare with and without this advanced course...i bet youll find liitle/ no difference in price. And even if it is you have to work out how many years of cheaper insurance it will take to make up the cost of the course. ( also baring in mind next years insurance may be cheaper with someone else who gives no discount)

If you want to do the course to become a better and safer rider then go for it....but as far as doing it to save insurance money, i seriously wouldnt bother.

I really thought that the courses did lessen the insurance by a fair amount but after looking it really doesn't Rolling Eyes Well at least its one less thing I have to do to make insurance cheaper Laughing lol.

No one replied to my other question so here it is: I can swap my r125 for a restricted bandit on the same policy but it may change the price but i will still get my NCB?

If you keep the same policy going with the same insurer then yes , the policy will end the same date as before and youll earn the years bonus, as long as you dont claim.

The only problem comes if the brokers says you current insurer wants an extra £ 300 to swap to the bandit but we can do it for the year with another insurer on a new 12 month policy for £200 so theyll cancel the first policy and take out a new 12 month one and therefore you wouldnt get the ncb till the end of that new 12 month policy.

If you're still on the same insurance policy, you should still get your ncb. I swapped from a Varadero 125 to my Fazer and picked up 1 years no claims at the end of the year. In fact, I got a £25 refund through doing it as the fazer is lower risk.

It depends.
If you can swap bikes on the same policy and then let that finish you will certainly get the year's NCB/NCD/whatever.

However, some policies will not cover or allow the bigger bike in which case the broker effectively cashes in the existing policy and takes out another. In theory this should then give you the year NCB as the new policy should expire at the same time as the old one. However, it may not and be a new one year contract, although in my experience this is rare but you will have to check.

You could always 'phone or email and ask insurance company/broker.
Sadly insurance companies/brokers are not your friend. They just want your money, they will not do you any favours.
