Been looking at a Yamaha XJ600 diversion and a Kawasaki ER650A6S

Anyone got any advice on these two bikes? Smile

For what purpose really? General riding on Sunday or commuting etc? Are you just after a which is best of the two? What sort of budget do you have?

£4k on a first big bike is brave ish Laughing

Personally I'd go for the ER6 out of the list of what you've got there. a) I think it's the better looking bike, b) it's always had good write ups in terms of it's ride, c) the suzuki 'potentially' may not be as good in terms of build quality (if you believe what you read online) and d) the divvy is just a bit boring really (if you believe what you read online)

However, the yammy is probably the most reliable of the bunch and looking at prices it seems to be a little more cash for the equivalent zuki or kwaka.

Laughing

Have you looked into insurance premiums as well. Could affect the overall costs. It's not unusual for a more expensive bike to have cheaper insurance. Also running costs, consumables, tyre choices, parts (like exhaust) etc. Or all that may sound far too practical Very Happy

I've yet to buy a bike that I couldn't afford to leave in a burning heap while whistling a happy tune. Whistle

But we're not on a rehearsal, get the bike that you want, not the one that other people recommend.

On those bikes, they're much of a muchness. All pretty sensible, built to a budget, with more performance than you can use legally in the UK, but not enough to keep a Power Ranger happy.

Y U NO consider CBF600, Fazer, Hornet, Street Triple, Monster? Wink

Really, pick the one (or two, or three) that you like best, give it or them a try. Buy the one that fits, there's no clear one-bike-pwns-all winner, and they all have happy owners who bought the right bike for them.

4k is an awful lot of cash to splash out on any bike, let alone 1st bike.
As many will say - you will drop it, be it knocked over on your drive when stationery or God forbid have a smidsy of some description.

It is your money & are free to spend as you wish, but I would have though half of that budget for 1st bike combined with winter onset conditions to contend with would be a safer approach, but that's just MHO.

Whatever you decide, enjoy & be safe Thumbs Up

FWIW remember that the CBF600 and CB600F are different bikes.

If you are concerned which bike will fit you it might be worth having a look at this site - cycle-ergo.com (clicky link).

Thats a good point, but should only be used as an indication. For example, a Street Triple has the narrowest tank going and a Hornet is pretty wide.

Heres a few options for you:

CBF600 if you get excited by words like 'reliability' and 'economy'
Gladius if you want the girliest bike ever. Styled by Ann Summers.
Hornet if you're slightly dangerous. For the sort of person that likes to swim less than an hour after lunch.
Monster if you are a midget with a penchant for Italian stallions
SV650 if you like pointy bikes and corroded downpipes
ER6 if you like green
Divvy if you're after a good, sensible choice but don't like green
Any sort of 600-650 Bandit if you wear tracksuits and think attaching the whole of the Demon Tweaks' anodised range to your bike might be a good idea
Street Triple if you want the predictably brilliant choice.

Same budget as me this time last year and also on first big bike...I went with the Street Triple. Try and get some test rides (not always possible for new licence holders) and go from there. I took teh Triple out and loved it.

Mrs Borg wanted to know why I was spitting wine out of my nose, and I had to tell her it's because the discussion of "My First Big Bike" is officially over.

I had an XJ6 - nice and smooth and typical Yamaha quality. However the torque of a twin is usually more exciting IMO. particularly pulling away in low gears. The ER6 is a great bike and for those who are not vertically challenged, the Versys which has the same engine, but more agressive styling. I would avoid paying too much unless you are very confident or rich! I agree with the comment above - you will drop it (just parking on a slight incline its all it takes!) A sporty option is the SV650 - great fun and very light. Bandits are too heavy IMO (I've had 2) Avoid fairings - a slight spill can do £1000 damage easily. Oh and fit crash bungs - worth the cost. Whatever you choose - have fun and start Smile every ride!
