dissolving bodies

I know I'm a bit late, but only just started watching breaking bad. No I haven't killed anyone
Why does he used hydrofluoric acid to dissolve the body in episode 2? I thought that alkali's attacked organic compounds more so that acids. If this is the case then he should have used something like sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide
chemists of BCF enlighten me.............

Never seen (or heard of) the program you indicate. However, technically you are correct - very strong alkali will destroy body tissue better than most acids. The bones will survive of course, albeit damaged. ANYONE handling hyrdofluoric is more likely to kill themselves - VERY toxic, gives off toxic vapours, and is difficult to handle. Sure, it is a strong acid eg will etch/ dissolve glass - which adds to the handling problems.

Hydrofluoric acid is very dangerous but it'd be rubbish for dissolving bodies. Its burns are actually painless because it damages nerves but it damages deep tissues by leaching calcium out of them and out of blood. A fairly small burn can be lethal for this reason.

There's nothing that will really dissolve a body on its own - a strong base will probably be a better idea but you'll still have stuff to dispose of.

Watched the first two series last week and loved it. Treating myself to a couple of others tomorrow as its pay day.

2 episodes into the first season and I'm already nit picking the flaws, or the stupidity of a world class chemist. Not sure if it's because I'm drugged up on codeine or because I like to nit pick. It's quite entertaining though. Not as good as people have hyped it up, but it does get a lot better apparently. Looking forward to it though.

Breaking bad is slow. It's like larva creeping forwards relentlessly. Eventually it reaches something important and everything blows up spectacularly. Then it goes back to creeping along.
I've known plenty of people give up on it, but the longer you watch it the better it gets.

I have also started watching it, the first series last week and now am on episode 1 of the second series.

Does have it's slow moments but it looks good so far, i reckon he's going to have to kill his partner or the partner will die.

I am guessing hydrofluoric was used because it is so quick at dissolving stuff. Also he seemed to have access to a lot of it.
