Hi all, I'm about to take delivery of a fzs600 - Monday actually & although the downpipes are sound they would really benefit from a good clean up as the pic shows.
I've never attempted this on any bike before & therefore would be grateful for any tips or advice offered on how to get a better look.

I'm not expecting nor after a showroom finish, but just a decent clean up after which I'll be fitting a bellypan to hopefully help keep some of the coming winter's crap & salt off them a little.

Cheers

Smile Short off taking them off for a work shop clean up try Duraglit and/or Tcut, fair bit of elbow grease would be required but plug in some music to your ears and spend a while on them, whithout going hell for leather and taking your time it can be quite relaxing, or as Rob Fzs suggests high temp paint, have fun Thumbs Up

Tbh rob, it's simply for the job of helping keep some weather off them or I probably wouldn't be considering it.

I will be doing a fair bit of motorway disatance over next few months etc: so thought it may help Question

Cheers

Well I've got endless tins of acf50 so may well just go down that route after all Rob once I've used a little wet & dry on them.

Could you recommend a good rear tyre for it please Rob as on mot it was an advisory & whilst it may have 3000 miles left in it possibly, I'd feel better getting it done now with the amount of travelling I have to do next 3-4 months.

Cheers

I don't think the downpipes on the Fazer of that era are supposed to look like metal. They are supposed to be painted black in high temp paint IIRC.

Polishing them up might ruin them...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

cheaper option, and just as good, might be standard pilot roads!

Graham, with the tyres I'd really recommend matching up with front if thats got plenty of life in it especially if you're planning on riding in the wet. The treads are designed to work in unison

If for example its got a Bridgestone BT016 on the front, then go Bridgestone BT016 rear ....

+1 I was going to say, they're painted so whats the issue? They look rather good in that picture. I'd take a guess and say that they're not stainless steel either, so if you did go at them with a wire brush or wet&dry all you'd do is take the paint off and expose the bare metal, which will rust like crazy.

When I had my Fazer I used to coat them and the engine fins with some black BBQ type paint - it came up really well.

You will love the bike, so easy to work on.

High temp bbq style paint it is then.

i always ran basic old qualifiers on mine, no complaints, they don't suit every bike but they're cheap and suit the fazer

downpipe's go underneath on the collector part not the tubes, try and avoid the delkevic replacements as they're not as good as motad

Don't bother doing anything to them.

Whatever they did to the Fazer downpipes, they did good and NOTHING after market, ie paint or whatever will be better than the original kept in good condition.

My policy is don't fix something that isn't broken and I can send you a picture of a set of Fazer downpipes that are broken and do need fixing to show you when they need fiddling with! For the rest of the time, clean the bike regularly and leave it at that.

True, it's not as if it's a shiney new bike & even if was it won't stay that way for long in winter regardless of a strict cleaning regime.
Will apply lashings of acf50 & just due regular checks on all throughout the winter months. Thumbs Up

If you apply ACF50 to your exhausts, it will burn off every time you run the bike, so you'll be forever recoating them. And you'll have to deal with the smoke of it burning off, which will stink.

Oh, and ACF50 is labelled as "explosive" rather than "flammable". Thinking

Hmmmm, a point I'd not even considered Brick Wall
I'll just keep on top of the clean up regime, do every other day or so to help prevent too much build up me thinks.

So long as you don't damage the current painted coating on them, you should be good. Thumbs Up
