At the age of 33 I'm finally getting motorised
I'm still deciding whether the CBT or DAS (with associated training/purchase/running/tax/insurance costs) route yet - trying to get the best use out of my cash...
I'm a 6 footer, so most of the cheaper Jap/Chinese bikes (IMO, and backed up by biker mates) will be uncomfortably small for me.

Is it me or is there a stupid cash premium associated with 125's? I've been looking at Honda Varadero and I've seen today a £200 difference between a 125 and a tour spec'd 1k?

Welcome.

IMO you will have problems finding a 125 suitable for a tall person to ride for any time. Default answers seem to be the Honda Varadero XL125V (it is expensive but well put together) and the Hyosung GT125 Comet (it's not as expensive but not as well put together and parts are a pain). There are some others if you look around.

Best as suggested is to do the DAS. You will need a CBT and IIRC a theory test too now. However the CBT can be bundled with the DAS course. The theory you'll have to sort out.

You can't do the MOD1 without having done the theory.

You have three options;

1) do the CBT, buy a 125 and pootle on it till next year, then do the test on a full power

2) do the CBT, buy a 125 and get your MOD 1 & 2 done before January 2012 for a 33bhp restricted for 2 years) license. This option will no longer be available after Jan 2013.

3) do a DAS now, or after January, makes no difference. You'll still need a CBT whether first or included in the DAS.

Yup, you're going to have to do a CBT anyway, so see how you get on with whatever 125 they provide. You may look a bit daft, but you don't (usually) see yourself when you're riding, so worry about control, not pose factor.

And yes, just go straight for a DAS (aka A aka A3) course, 125s have silly cost and insurance premiums.

What Roger said, try the 125 and if you get on with it go for the DAS. Unless you need transport right away you have a fair few months till some decent weather so plenty time to save up for a nice bike bike

Well, in an effort to be a 'real man' I've been getting quotes on combined CBT/DAS today around the £600 mark - that's bike/kit rental, tests and 4 training days. Sound about right?

Agree with others, obv cbt will be on 125 & hopefully you'll have a good enough time to want to do more riding.

DAS is ideally the way to go then your options are unlimited.
Whilst 125's are great learning tools, you will undoubtedly soon become fored buckless of them.
