As a lover of garlic I always grow my own, usually I just grab some bulbs from Mr Mohamed's corner emporium and chuck them in at the winter equinox but I have been researching more exotic varieties such as This anyone got any experience of growing and any variety recommendations?

I have grown Elephants foot garlic the last couple of years. They are about the size of an orange.
Delicious roasted whole and then used for dipping crusty bread into.

Its quite mild in flavour but bloody lovely.

This year I grew some romanian red garlic, very hot and very very strong.

Did the Romanian crop well Tom? The elephant's foot does not do it for me, I need a lot of flavour.

Managed to get around 20 bulbs from 40 seeds so not too bad, tbh I don't take the best care of them.
As I remember it was only £2 for 20 seeds in a sale at Wilko's of all places last year!

Poke seed/clove into the ground, water when you remember, gape in awe at pretty firework exploding shaped flower, wait for flower/stem to die back, dig up and eat.

thats all I do.

The flowers are nice but it is best to cut the stem before it develops as it will hinder bulb growth. The cloves need to go in 50mm (2 inch) deep and 130mm (4 1/2 inches) apart plant pointy end up either in early Spring or Autumn according to variety. Harvest in late July when the top growth turns yellow.

Wild Garlic is nice to have in for the Spring, you eat the stems, leaves and flowers in salads rather than the bulb, It is a subtle taste but enjoyable.

I decided on two varieties "Bella Italia" and a Georgian (Caucasus not USA) variety called Chesnok Red.
There were a couple of runty Chesnok cloves that did not get planted but ended up in my breakfast mushrooms instead. Eleven hours later all I can taste is garlic, they are powerful!
