I've also been led to understand that when it expires, it invalidates any mod 1 pass that you've achieved, even if you just got it. Doesn't make sense, but this is the DfT we're talking about.

Surely everyone does the theory test after their CBT, so moots the point?

So what? As long as you pass your tests within the two years it doesn't matter

Huh?

You are aware that a CBT is renewed every two years, aren't you? Only way to not have to resit every two years is to obtain a full licence?


That was exactly the point, you have to redo the CBT every 2 years, so if you haven't passed within 2 years you expect to go through again from the beginning - hence you have to do CBT/theory/MOD1 again if you couldn't handle within the first 24 months.
If you haven't passed within 2 years it's time you gave up and got the bus.

Personally, I feel like it's general knowledge to know that, and it's deffo not something I find out on the cert itself, I look these things up so I know whether I'll have enough time to pass my mod 1-2 before it expires, which I did, and yeah..

Surely 2 years is long enough if financially you've not got a problem?
I passed all 3 parts in 2 weeks, can be done pretty quickly if you can afford it.

Only? It's two years fella. That is a long time. You can do a DAS course and get it all done in less than a week, but even the slow route (buying a 125cc) takes about three to four months (and that's allowing for time to practice, long booking times and a couple of resits). The two year limit is only a problem if you're too lazy to get the ball rolling and do your tests.

If you cant pass your motorcycle test in two years then its probably fair to have to re do both cbt and Theory tests.

I don't get the logic here.

Taking the Theory is not a requirement so to do so would imply an intention to continue to a full licence and to embark on this would suggest funds had been planned. Two years (or eight riding seasons) is plenty of time to continue through to full licence.

Just because a CBT allows one to ride for two years without supervision why should the theory test cert lifespan for bikes be different for car drivers that must have supervision?

Frankly, I think the Theory should be linked to both CBT and be a requirement before driver training for a car. In fact, it would probably make roads safer if it was part of the national curriculum in year 11 (free of charge due to savings on the NHS/Fire/Police budgets). Pedestrians are considered road users in the HC, so make them be aware of this 'stuff'... Maybe a project for one the Uni students looking for a subject?
