I have occasionally owned cars before, but generally ones that were about £1500.

I decided to get something newer, and for convenience I bought something newer thinking I wouldnt have to worry about reliability.

It's a fiat panda diesel 1.3 multijet.

It's currently at the garage awaiting diagnosis but it went into limp home mode and seems to have some kind of injection problem.

The dealer was rather keen to sell me a warranty, at the time , i just thought he wanted a bit of extra profit, now I'm wondering if he knew it was going to go bang.

It's done 60,000 miles. I've only owned it 2 weeks and only gone through one tank of diesel.

I've not rang him yet.

I think I have more rights than with a private sale but not sure what.

I've heard of people using small claims court for repair bills under certain circumstances.

Opinions welcome, particularly people who know what they are talking about.

Google those.

But yeah, first call would be to the dealers. They will "hopefully" pick it up if they are worth anything.

Diagnostic machine will find exactly what is up, they should replace the part, I believe most dealers offer 3 months cover regardless (this is purely from working in 2 dealerships, they may differ but if people refused additional cover, they got the standard 3 month) Thumbs Up

Ring ring. Wink

From dealership goods must be fit for purpose - after two weeks it's broken down so clearly not. Dealerships sometimes disagree hence why small claims court often used.

Don't accept any "part payment" or contribution towards bill if you then want it taken to court for full amount - it will be decided that the contribution settled the matter.

He did, when you bought the car. As a motor trader he cannot sell a vehicle without a warranty (IIRC for a 'reasonable time and mileage'). 2 weeks and ~400 miles would almost certainly fall within that definition on a car of that age/mileage.

Ring him, tell him what's happened. He might be perfectly OK about it and offer to repair it FOC, but you won't know until you contact him.

Make sure you call the dealer before putting it in for repair. The dealer won't pay you anything unless it's repaired on his terms.

It's not actually a warranty, it's the sale of goods act 1979.

Chapter 14 I believe.

FFS, don't spazz out and start giving it "I know my rights!" straight off the bat like some assburgers mental case. I know it'll be hard, but try and act reasonably and give the dealer a fair chance to sort it.

A fault developed on my car 2 weeks after i bought it.
I just rang the dealer, told him the car was playing up and asked him where he wanted me to take it to be sorted.

I was expecting him to kick up a fuss, but he was good as gold about it.
So dont automaticaly think that they will try to wriggle out of it...

Be nice but firm, and only start getting shitty if they wont play ball.

It's a Fiat, it's more likely the internal electronics are playing up, and you don't have an injection problem at all.

In the past I've had the diagnostic telling me the car was over heating, and in imminent danger of a complete implosion.
Turns out it's just crappy Fiat electronics!

Have you tried taking it in the bath and cleaning it whilst washing? That would cause issues.

Mmm, you can pick up a basic OBD reader from eBay for in the order of £20. You shouldn't need it in this case, since the dealer should sort you out, but out of warranty it's a no brainer versus paying garage prices for diagnosis.

Thanks guys. Garage has cleared the faults codes and nothing has reappeared, so nothing solved, but just hoping the problem doesnt reappear. It's out of limp mode.

I rang the dealer to let him know, so if the problem reoccurs I may well take it back to him.
