You don't really need to impress for a basic retail job. Just don't act retarded and sound confident. They want you to be able to sell stuff so think of that.

Personally? Don't even think about leaving Wetherspoons.

I worked at PC World a few years ago, despite being 16 and part time, I was still expecting to meet the same targets, even when I was sat on a till for 8 hours.

I got treated like crap. Often went without a break. Always kept on (without pay).

I got a bollocking when I was two minutes late, the reason? The manager was on his mobile and wouldn't answer the door to let me in.

It was agreed when I joined that I would work every Sunday, and every other Saturday. A month in they said I would have to do every weekend, as I wasn't allowed to do an odd number of hours or something.

Never told when my holiday was, or days off coming up to Xmas. When I found out I wasn't due to be in they just said 'well you're here now'. Being 16 and newish, I put up with it.

The final straw was the manager reducing me to tears (it takes a lot for me to cry too) infront of everyone. I walked out at 1600 on Sunday, got home, write my letter of resignation, put my locker key in it and left. It was honestly the best feeling I have ever felt.

I was also told off for not selling anti virus to a couple who got a cheap computer. They didn't have access to the internet, and didn't plan to. All they wanted it for was to write letters in word and few photos on a disc from their kids. I was told to lie and say they needed it anyway.

I go in there now every so often and see the same people there when I was (2006), looking miserable. My parents used to work at Currys (same company if you didn't know), and they said students then used to get treated like shit.

Good luck tomorrow, but do keep in mind what JFK said.

Also, this which is both surprising and from your perspective, worrying.

Dress nice, speak clearly, be confident and don't fart in the interview. Also, if they ask awkward questions, don't go silent while you try to think of an answer. Start talking confidently and let yourself run on to an answer.

Just because of who they are and which group they are in.

Makes sense though I guess, the company is trying to fill essentially the same niche as both of its stablemates.

Had a mate who worked there, similar story to JFK. End of the day they prey on ignorant customers because lets face it, online businesses are taking all their profits these days so they need to make money some how. You'd probably be better of stocking shelves in a supermarket, I bet there's no difference in the pay.

Thats what I left to do.

Get £7.14 a hour at Tesco, fairly sure thats better than what I was with PC World. Stress is a lot less too.

Good luck. Make sure you look people in the eye, it makes a big difference. Given what's happening with Comet, I would be wary. Why do you want to leave your current job?

Big tip - learn how to express yourself in written English. The way you write is atrocious - crap spelling and no idea of punctuation. Punctuation shows the ability to order information. You don't show this ability. It makes you seem like an illiterate 7 year old. Really.

The job is sales. You're like a graduate in English who gets a job selling books in Waterstones. And I say that like it's a bad thing.

If you get the job it's just about your level; I'm sorry. All those massive loans to end up selling shite in a shop. Rolling Eyes

How do I know so much about your failings? I was a Careers Advisor for Durham University until recently.

He's right though. He hasn't sugar coated it, which isn't very nice, but he is right. I've done a fair bit of application sifting (amongst other, related things) and if anything even remotely like that OP ended up on my desk it would be going straight in my 'B' pile.

Back on topic, and hopefully something more helpful in the short term:

woodall57 - its all about upselling. I imagine you do that at Spoons anyway (2 for 1, double up for a quid etc); you'll just be doing it with less drunk people. Just make it transferable to the insurance, AV, sparkly iPod cases etc. Customer service is all transferable, you do that anyway, and you're already employed so you're halfway to convincing them that you'll turn up for work on time. The only other thing to cover is to give them the impression that you're chomping at the bit to be given some 'stretching' targets that you'll then go on to exceed, all for £6.19 an hour. Practice this in the mirror to make it sound convincing.

Once you've done all that, have a think if you really want it. JFK's post is an interesting one and don't be afraid to ask them a question or two at the end of the interview about the people you'll be working with and the classic 'what's the best thing about working here?'

Why Pc world? If its because you like technology and think it would be good to a job with interest.....forget it.

You know how to use a computer and are looking for a job so you are more qualified than most who apply and succeed, as you have already discovered it is very much sales, not honest advice or help and pushy sales at that!

I did a 3 month stint there whilst weighing up that vs an M&S warehouse (which would be the best stopgap - naturally) I left and stayed in the warehouse, despite being very good it didn't sit with me well selling the way they wanted, as said up-sells is key as margins on basic hardware is low, they don't half like shifting norton antichrist.

I have no problem with up-selling something people might want and am happy to refrain if people clearly don't want, this will not sit well with them.

Unless you hate where you are think about it, or do a trial period because at least people in a whetherspoons are happy to be there!

I wish you all the best with your interview. Good on you for looking to improve yourself. Ignore most of the negative comments on here. Go with an open mind. There are some well paid top execs at PC World. You might be one some day! Go with condidence but no too cocky. Say you are willing to learn. Say that you will try to be approachable to customers and try hard to listen to the advice of your supervisor. This is not crawling it actually is what employers are looking for. If they suggest hours etc -just say yes - no point arguing the toss at this stage. Dress well and remove studs etc. Comb your hair. Do everything right and you will get the job. If it is not for you then you can leave later. Once you have the job do not dwell on the shortcomings - concentrate on doing things well and give it a chance. I have interviewed and worked with many new colleagues in my time. Some were worth their weight in gold and went very far. Hope it goes well - it could be the start of a successful future - how exciting. Most successful people started at the very bottom and still got where they are today.....remember that!
