PostPosted: 08:52 - 02 Nov 2012    Post subject: WiseBuyers Prices Accurate? Reply with quote

Hi,

I have just done my CBT and am looking at getting a 125 to get some miles on.

I have been looking at all the usual places, and have been using WiseBuyers as a guide for pricing.

I've noticed that for a lot of bikes for sale come in at a fair bit more than WB reckon they should cost, especially from dealers.

Does anyone know if WB has accurate pricing? I am certain if I go to the dealer and quote the WB price, they will insist that they are a load of rubbish, but they would do that anyway.

Specifically, I am currently considering a 6 month old YBR custom that they dealer has priced for £2000. WB says it should be £1650.

Anyone know what a fair price would be for this?

Thanks.

£1650 seems ok.

You could pick up one for that price if you looked around. £2k would be a pretty new one with minimal miles. Pointless spending that much though.

I know the common advice is to buy a cheapish 125 to start, but looking around, I have struggled to find anything that seems reliable for less than about £1100. That is a 5-10 year old bike with MOT.

It just seems that if I can spend £500 more and get a year and a half warranty and no MOT requirement for a few years, it seems the better deal.

If anyone can suggest a decent option in the Gloucestershire area, I would certainly be interested.

Keep an eye on Gumtree and Ebay (Set the latter up with your postcode and order it by distance!). Warranties don't cover consumables I think I'm right in saying, and they're generally the only things that'll wear out with use within the warranty time.

Thanks for the tips Flamzypants, I am pretty much permanently glued to Ebay, Gumtree, autotrader and MCN.

The problem seems to be that the 125 market is pretty strong, and anything with more than a few months MOT is pricey. As much as I would rather a dinged up old bike, I can't justify £1100+ for it when newish ones are around for a few hundred more.

Will go and have a look at this custom, and keep my eyes everywhere else to look for alternatives.

Bike prices are all over the place, and subject to seasonal, regional and local variations. You're wasting your time waving a bit of paper at a dealer. He'll quite rightly ask "So?" and wish you good luck finding one at that price.

You haven't said where you are. IIRC, Yaigi has a well looked after YBR Custom for sale in Liverpool.

If you want to score a bargain, forget dealers. Scour Gumtree and eBay regularly, and don't forget your local small ads.

Have your budget in hand in cash - don't wait until you see a bike. Get in fast when something tempting appears. My last 2 bikes have been bagged by responding within half an hour of the adverts appearing.

I bought a 2007 Varadero 125 with no MOT and half years tax for £650.

It has some serious mileage on it, but it went through the MOT at the cost of a brake disk (£40)

Buying slightly older might be bad for some, but checking the overall condition of the bike is far far better than just going by the number on the reg plate. Thumbs Up

Why not.

Someone I know picked up an 11 plate YBR at the beginning of the year for <£1600

Looks like you are right in this instance, they are selling on behalf of a customer, who doesn't want to budge on the price.

I will still put a low offer in, but am not hopeful.

@Rogerborg I did say I am in Gloucester(shire), but was likely writing the post at the same time as you. Liverpool is a bit too far for me at the mo, and delivery costs would push the price up quite a bit.

Back to Ebay for me then Smile

Yeah keeping your eyes peeled is the way to do it. I waited a month for my current bike to pop up on ebay, 20k miles, 07 , chain and sprockets were pretty much dead but the rest was in good condition £1k. I think new ones go for 3-4x that figure. But I've seen similar bikes get sold within a day of being online for twice what I paid for it. My area (Chichester) was an arse to find decent 125s, it may be worth expanding the distance you're willing to go.

Pays to keep an eye on things from a smartphone if you have it, I jumped the bugger as soon as it came up and made the exchange before any other offers got in!

Yeah but we are talking about a Custom....and 6 months old.

I sold my 11 plate (18 month old) YBR Standard just a few weeks ago for £1600 so id very much doubt youll get a 6 month old custom anywhere near £1650. Maybe an ultra high mileage one perhaps, or a trashed one maybe.

At the moment it looks like 125s are holding value amazingly....probably due to theinflux of people wanting to get a restricted llicence the cheap way before january.

Well as an update to this, I just bought a 57 plate YBR for £1300 from an independent dealer.

Pretty happy with the bike on the whole, looks clean and tidy, just need to wait for the guy to MOT & service it.
