Rolling Eyes FANTASTIC Thumbs Down

Thought I'd let brother take the Varadero out to get some shopping for his kids, he is covered by insurance and what not but thought he could do with some time out of the house etc.

Doesn't gear up, trackies, jacket and a helmet, you know. Chav 2 da max.

He kinda limped back home about 20 minutes later, bit worrying. Tears in his eyes...more worry.

Me - "Where is the bike...."

Chav - "you are going to hate me... im sorry"

He says he dropped it turning right. I called bullshit.

Had a look at it, the forks are either bent or slightly twisted in the yokes, the front right fairing is fucked, looks like Stevie Wonder was armed with a belt sander laced with grit and diamonds.
My Tucano Urbano on the right has been chewed through, the handle bars are bent, the exhaust cover has a massive dent in there and has been ground down on the bolt, marvellous.

I could barely ride it home, waited with him till the ambulance arrived, turned out he has broken a fair few things. One thing he has shattered is my trust in him.

Pics to follow, its way too dark now to take them Thumbs Down Utterly fucked off.

Indeed! He managed to ride back 55 miles, but can't get more than half a mile to a shop. Huzzah Sad

He won't pay, he owes me £300 for his moped still. Thumbs Down

Won't happen. He has no money, he is on the dole with 2 kids... You try to help people out and sometimes they just don't realise what means very little to them is a lot to someone else.

I know he's your brother mate, but if you know he's like that then I'd just firmly put it that he's no longer welcome etc.

You need a hand fixing owt, let me know, I'm pretty good at holding engines and bending things back into shape.

To crash a 125 you HAVE to be being an arse on it, this shows a lack of respect to you as a trusting brother and even less respect to not pay for the damage caused by being an arse on it !

I only lend my bike to people i trust and can pay for the damage, ive lend my bike to lots of people on BCF, even on trackdays.

Family of not, poor or not it shows a complete lack of respect to you.

Id be livid, infact im livid putting myself in your shoes Razz

I loan my bike out, I have no issues with people using it.

As you say to crash it, you need to be a ham fisted spacker. I reckon due to the 8-10 inch scuff down the side and the amount of bend in the handlebars, reckon 15mph~ locking the brake on like a cock.

I know he is my brother, I have told him that's it... I've spent over £1k keeping him mobile on the road, mainly for his kids sake... for him to crash both the moped now my commuter. No more chances with this one.

Like i said.

I too loan out my bikes, but only to people i TRUST and can afford to pay me back if they bin.

More fool you if you expect him to maybe crash it and especially not to pay.

Thing is, he can ride. I've ridden with him before, he managed to ride from Kent to Manchester... I have some faith in him. But seriously, it was totally unexpected but if he was twatting around, then its all his fault and I have no sympathy Thumbs Up

Paddy's bike = crashed Thumbs Down

Paddy wasn't on it. Thumbs Up

When someone wants to lend something, I ask myself if I'll be pissed off if I don't get it back. Then usually lend it to them anyway. And then ring them up and demand it back when I finally remember that they've got it. Don't think there actually is a useful lesson in that...

Hope the bike doesn't cost too much to fix.

It's a tough call when it's your brother. Mine? No problem at all. He would have gone and brought a mint second hand one to bring back and still apologised. I have no issue letting people borrow my stuff. If they don't bring it back then I guess I made a poor judgement of their character and I'm better off without them.

I don't lend or borrow anything these days. I used to, but it rarely ends well.
The absolute best you can hope to achieve by lending something out is to get it back in the same condition [unlikely], the normal expectation is to have it back slightly worse than it was [yay] - the worst case scenario is as OP has described [yay^2]
The same for borrowing something - 5 years after borrowing it, the lender will say "This has just fallen apart. It wasn't like that when I lent it to you" [yay to feeling obliged into paying for repairs]

If I need something, I buy it or rent it.
If you need something, you buy it or rent it.
= happiness.

I stopped letting people borrow vehicles after my mate smashed a car of mine up doing handbrake turns in an empty car park.

I bought the car for £200 as a "couldn't-care-less-about-it" runabout which I could chuck rubbish and bricks and garden waste in the back and not bothered about scratches or anything, anyway took it to an empty industrial estate carpark on a sunday afternoon where a friend works to have a bit of fun doing j-turns, my friend begs me for a go, does a handbrake turn and bounces off a kerb completely ripping the rear hub off the axle and buckling the floor and rear wing.

He bought the car off me there and then for the £200 I paid for it, but then the hassle of having to get a new one. And I didn't bother.
