Car buying guide: anything missing?

I'm about to go out looking at buying my first cheap 2nd hand car. I'm planning to use this guide - https://www.hintsandthings.co.uk/garage/buyingacar.htm - to aid as a prompt so that i inspect the car thoroughly.

Is there anything glaringly obvious missing from that guide that i should also be checking?

Around a grand, although i have enquired about cars costing half that too
Long MOT, get me to work in the middle of the sticks kind of thing.

Looking at Kia Rio's today, although will probably be looking at Nissan Almera's, Honda Civic's, Vauxhall Astra's, Ford Escort's, Honda Accord's another day.

I'd exclude the Ford Escort these days. But your other choices seem very sensible ones.

Check your insurance costs first. Each vehicle will differ, sme will make your eyes water.

There were so many on the road at one time, and you hardly see any around now due to the rust, welding is expensive and it sends them to the scrapper, they were good cars in their time but they're trouble these days, near to bottom on reliability surveys. Still not the worst choice you could make (Rover K series!) but can do far better bangernomics wise.
