Platelet donation

Gave blood a few weeks ago for the first time and got a letter today saying I'm eligible to donate some platelets - anyone done this? Is it as easy as giving blood and does it make you feel ill after?

Platelets are in your blood. I imagine it would be the same as donating blood except that after you have given your blood, they extract the platelets from it - a process which does not require you to be connected to any devices since your blood has already been extracted.

Just my guessing though.

A bloke at work does it, sounds just as Benno said.
They can take a few doses at a time, think it takes about an hour in total and he does this once a month.

He doesn't feel I'll, just a bit drained sometimes.

I've been giving blood for a while and always say I'm going to say give platelets the next time. The process takes about 90 minutes I think, can't see it being any different other than the time.

I looked into it but the nearest place to me is 80 miles away, so looks like I'll be sticking with whole blood donations.

to take platelets they hook you up to a machine that "filters" the platelets out and puts your blood back in.. you have to travel to a centre where they carry it out, it's not like a normal donation.

Donating platelets is a bit different than donating blood. You essentially get blood taken, they remove the platelets and put the rest of the blood back into you. Means you can donate much more frequently than if you gave whole blood.

Yeah, platelets are removed by sticking hte blood in a centrifuge.

Fun fact for the day: British people can't give blood in Australia because of the numerous bovine related endemic diseases we've had over the years.

It takes about an hour and you can do it at least once a month. It all depends on your natural platelet levels.

Also the anticoagulant makes your teeth and jaw feel really weird - not particularly fun! Something to do with stripping calcium IIRC

On the Blood site I can see where my donations go. I looked a while ago and was confused to see that my donation was used for “Buffy Coat”.

I had to look that up and apparently they centrifuge the blood and the buffy coat layer is a whitish residue containing a high concentration of platelets and leukocytes.

So there you go. Nothing to do with keeping cute vampire hunters warm after all.

Cheers for the replies, did some research last night and doesn't seem too bad - but my nearest donation centre is 30 miles away so I'll probably give it a miss. It's a shame they don't spend some of the money they spend on letters and postage on compensating donors. For travel expenses I might do it.

I have been giving blood since the 1970s and went Gold quite a while ago.

I like to think that some squaddie on a tour of duty or in hospital over here will get my blood instead of some Taliban fighter shooting/blowing up our blokes

I can't remember if I'm on my 4th or 5th whole blood donation. I had my appendix out so that's my way of giving something back. My local center is also a short walk away so it costs me nothing to go. I ruled out platelet donation because I'd have to travel 25 miles and spend too long there. I've heard they may pay expenses for platelet donations if you ask them, although they don't like to; maybe an idea to ask them if money is the main factor why you can't give.
