Prescriptions, who checks them?

Just something which i thought today.
When i used to be on jobseekers, i'd tick the box that im on jobseekers so i didnt need to pay for my NHS prescriptions, well since getting work, nothing has changed except i tick to pay for them. I was never asked for proof that i was on jobseekers nor did i even write my NI number, so my question is, who even checks up to see if its legit?

Our local doesn't...it does piss me off a little that jobseekers can get free pills, but the one who pays national insurance and gets free NHS has to pay for anti inflammatory pills.

No one probably, until 5 years down the line when they do a check and you get a bill for 5 years worth of prescriptions.

I suppose it is some compensation for putting up with the wee twerp Eck Salmond that the one time in the past 5 years that I have needed a prescription, I didn't have to pay for it.

to be honest, being on jobseekers i very rarely take prescriptions unless its actually needed.

none of this "doctor i have a cough" "doctor my knee hurts" "doctor ny nose is falling off"

if my nose is falling off its falling off. couldnt really care.

last time i actually took a prescription it was for a fungal infection. and only because the itching was unbarable, stopping me from sleeping and turning me into a somewhat unbarable person to live with.

got a cold? mtfu
got the flu? mtfu
got a period cramp mtfu

hate people who are on benefits and milk the whole prescription thing.

i "knew" a few people who did it with fake illnesses and sold the pills on.

i told one person about it, they went on to the police, problem solved till the next person picked up where they left off.

as for the checking thing, no one bothers to check it. sometimes the locals will check its filled in properly, but otherwise, not really.

Vast majority of patients only get prescriptions because they do not want to pay for them, it's not about them not having the money for them it's about the fact there is an option for them to be free if you do X or Y, so people will go for the free option. It's not rocket surgery

I see this daily, people even ask for paracetamol on prescription, about 50p a pack. GPs are no longer obliged to supply over the counter medicines as prescription as part of the 'pharmacy first' thing

There is no acceptable evidence of Jobseekers - after all, you may still have the book despite starting a job.

So we have to mark the "evidence not seen" box on the back.

The pricing computer spits all those scripts with marked boxes into a separate pile and someone sits there and goes through all the names and exemption claims with the DSS (or whatever they're called this week).

About 3 or 4 months later, anyone making a false claim gets a letter asking politely for the cash and mentioning the hefty fines that not paying may inccur.

As an aside, it's the person who signs the script who is liable, not the patient. So please don't be suprised when the girl on the counter declines to fill it in for you.



I'm in Wales these days where no-one basically pays and we don't have to go through all this rubbish with every patient. In England we've been tax collectors for many many years, it was a sad day when we accepted (or rather were told we would be by the government) becoming tax inspectors too, all for 2p a go, IIRC.

It's also quite amazing how forgetful people can be with their prescription items as they don't give a monkeys about the actual cost.

I buy mine, every other month. Two medications to control blood pressure. Its not a cost i like, but its better than having a stroke at an early age.

But she gets all sorts of idiots in. Apparently one bloke tried to steal the prescription book.

Being diabetic I have a medical exemption, And I'll get free prescriptions for life ( unless they bring a cure )

Sometimes I will use it for other problems I have, because I don't like taking risks with guessing what things I can buy over the counter that'll sort out any problem I have, so I will goto my GP and they'll give me something I've never heard of!

But back OT, they don't really check my Exemption cert, because I mostly get just my insulin, They kinda guess not to bother asking as they'd assume being diabetic I'd have exmeption cert, which I do so... XD

You say special printed slips, but they are essentially normal blank prescriptions which you could still steal from the printer and fill in by hand...

Since I'm (supposed to be) taking heart pills I get free prescriptions for life, but again we don't need to pay in Wales... still I'm not sure how much the NHS get charged for stuff like asprin, but I always felt better buying them at the shops for 19p a packet.

Also I've been to the doctors and had a printed prescription, written presciption and printed with an extra item written on
