twin carb help

hi i have a suzuki gt185 its twin with twin mikuni carbs and they are both broke so i need a nother twin carb .

just wondering would any twin carb fit or does it have to be a mikuni? and where do i measure to see how big the carb is?

Hi

Thr GT185 is a 2 stroke twin. Presume it uses slide carbs.

In theory you could get away with fitting any pair of carbs. In practice you will have problems fitting anything other than the original ones (cable connections, 2 stroke oil pipe connections, mounts to the inlets, mounts to the airbox, fuel connections, etc) and even once those are sorted you will be starting pretty much from scratch with the jetting so you could expect to spend a fair amount of time and money swapping needle jets, main jets, float heights, carb slides, etc.

Quite possible and could be interesting to learn but it would be far easier to source a set of original carbs.

What is wrong with the existing ones?

the bike isnt realy mine its my dads and he just asked me to ask on here about putting new carbs in i dont personaly know whats wrong with them all i know is that they arnt working propper
i do no that the carbs were made in 1974(i think lol)

With any luck they will be similar or the same to other carbs. Maybe those of the GT200 X5.

There is not actually that much to go wrong with slide carbs, beyond they being smashed or getting gummed up with old petrol residue. If you ask Craig_ then he might well have some good suggestions for what to use to clean out gummed up petrol.

Hi

No it would not. It is meant to be used to clean out the top end of the engine. As far as I know they make no claims for cleaning out carbs.

You can buy carb cleaner from Halfords and the like. However if the stuff is well gummed up then it probably will not work.

I did find a place in Wales that would ultrasonically clean carbs but the prices were not nice.

I would be tempted to get some carb or brake cleaner and fill a pot with it. Then take the jets out of the carb and leave them in the pot to soak for a few days. Do one carb at a time so you have something to reference the bits against when you put the carb back together.

I know that Craig_ has some experience cleaning out 2nd hand carbs that have been seriously gummed up

The dishwasher brings many bike bits (carbs, crankcases, alternator covers) up a treat. Take the jets out first though, just do the carb bodies and the float bowl on a normal wash cycle.

Should you get totally stuck. If he can make up a 2-1 manifold or find one off a similar model, the bike will run fine with a single standard carb.

Before you all tell me reasons why the above won't work, it does. I have done it before and so have several of my mates on various different bikes. You often find that the bike runs better than it has in years because an older bike has a lot of wear and discrepancies between the two carbs making it difficult to balance. A single carb means the carburettion is inherantly balanced anyway.

Crooks Suzuki do a lot of bits for old 2-stroke models.

iv cleaned th3e carb out out it back together perfect eveything is right but its pureing petrol out of the overflow pipes?

any idea?

Float height wrong, needle valve damaged or some grit stuck in the needle valve.
