How much is this worth?

The seller doesn't seem particularly forthcoming with information, even when prompted, so I'm worried it might be in need of a rebuild or worse. Any well worded questions I can ask to get the right answers?

And what is it worth?

Less than the starting bid...
My friend bought a YZ250F, road registered, for £850.

I'd say worth around 600

That seems very cheap - what year was it?

I've been watching a few on ebay, one 1997 yz finished earlier today at £740 - it'd be raced but had a few spares, and wasn't in the need of a rebuild. Hence why I'm thinking £850 (which the seller has said is his minimum) is a bit steep.

Any cute ways of getting more information out of him?

It's difficult because he hasn't had the bike long and it sounds like the previous seller hasn't told him anything...

it's on an 02 plate.

Also, some people just don't know about bikes, and others don't want to admit they're clueless. maybe he;s just one of them.

£850 is a bit high for one of these.

i'd want to see receipts for piston, rings etc to prove the condition of the top-end, unless i'd heard the engine running.

can you go and take a look or is it too far ?

It's not too bad, but I'd want to bring my dad and he's busy this weekend.

Found an 03 with a recent full rebuild for £1000 BIN but you're right it would be good to have a receipt. How different would a fresh and fucked engine sound?

If it's ready for a rebuild there'll be tapping noises from the top-end (piston slap).

Any obvious knocking or rumbling noises from the bottom end means a complete rebuild. (knackered big-end bearings (knocking) knackered main bearings (rumbling))

You want to check all gears engage properly and don't disengage when you give it some welly.

If they can't be bothered fixing the ripped seat I doubt they would have spent much on the more important things. I always kept my bikes in top condition. Kind of important for a moto x bike. Would steer clear mate cos it isn't even cheap

Nice wheels though

Cheers for that, so is there a foolproof way of checking that a bike has just had a rebuild? A seller is telling me it's had a full top and bottom end rebuild, and still needs to be run in. I've heard people say about taking out the spark plug and looking in the barrel - is that worthwhile or a waste of time?

If it idles high, and the revs drop back to idle slowly when rev'd. it's on its way out.

Knocking is pretty rare before seizure/popping IME.

A better gauge is to take off the exhaust and look at the piston. if there's blow-by on the rings, then it's not long for this world without attention.

if its had the full-rebuild then maybe its worth looking at. However, you want more than the sellers word that the engine has been rebuilt.

reciepts or it didn't happen Thumbs Up

also tell-tale sign of a bad top-end is low compression. try pushing the kickstart over in neutral by hand. if its easy to turn over the piston/bore is shot.
