apparently nothing

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-20248535

Quote:
A police force has filmed an officer "stealing" bicycles in full public view to show "just how easy" it is for a thief to get away unchallenged.

PCSO Neil Spiring, of Avon and Somerset Police, used bolt croppers and brute force to 'steal' four bikes.

To further highlight his staged activity the officer at one point dressed in a skeleton outfit.

The force said it wanted to encourage members of the public to call 999 as soon as they saw a crime taking place.

It added that on one occasion, more than 50 people walked past and saw the staged crime but nobody called the police.

Ive thought about this myself recently. Sometimes when im driving at night i wonder, if i witnessed a (non fatal) car accident, would i stop and tell the police what i saw or not bother. Giving statements etc just sounds like it takes a lot of time and can drag you into something you dont want to be in.

It's funny they say ring 999 the second you see a crime, we had a drunk driver come up our street, attempt to park her car, reversing into one and driving forward into another, she got out shouted to her friend in a house down the road 'i just hit these two cars LOL', rang the coppers telling them exactly what happened and no-one shows, even if i seen any crime i don't think i'd bother, they can't turn up to nab a drink driver who was sat there just waiting for a knock on the door then why bother with them at all.

I was once on the bus (terrible business that) and a load of kids with vodka tried to get on. The driver refused them and one of them spat on him, the driver made the mistake of getting out of his chair and off the bus, at which point 15ish (and a staffy. Though all it did was go mad at the lad holding the leash Laughing ) of them started kicking the shit out of him. The bus was packed, me and a couple of mates were stood at the back trying to push our way out to help him but everyone just stood in front staring.

At this point we are roughly 80 metres from the front door of the local police station which is open for roughly 1/67th of every day. I ran across and hammered on the door/windows and eventually got a response, which was someone hanging out a window on the second floor, shouted 'Some bloke has just been beaten up at the bus stop by a load of kids' then legged it back across to see what was going on. 10 minutes later the ambulance was just turning up as a single PCSO sauntered across the road...

Lightning.

Mates and me had to get a taxi. Most inconvenient.

After a personal experience reporting a crime I was myself victim to, I don't think I would bother making a police statement in the future, particularly if there are other witnesses, except for something serious, like a major crime, or where someone is seriously injured or killed.

I would still report crimes that I witnessed, but sod going through the hassle of making statements.

It's a shame a member of the public didn't turn hero and batter the shit out of him... that'd serve him right for (pretending to) steal bikes

Have a read of Wasting Police Time.

"the theft of a bicycle by three boys took around 20 hours (over the course of a month or so) to clear up"

They really, really don't want to know.

The tagline on the jacket is "This book will put you off calling the police more than anything except actually calling the police".

I really can't add anything more to that.

Except that I wonder how many bikes were getting nicked while Operation PR Stunt was carried out.

Last time I rang the police to report the theft of my bicycle it took them 2 days to get an officer with me despite me gathering CCTV footage, an old bicycle the thief used to cycle to where my bike had been locked up, going to Salford to look for my bike, almost catching someone on it who dropped their phone (which I picked up) and doing most of the work for them. Then they left it about 3 months before doing anything by which time the bike had magically disappeared, the guy I'd seen on it had no idea where it went (surprise surprise) and that was enough to close the case apparently. No bike back for me.

Great.

Exactly this.

Whats the point when a) they wont turn up anyway. B) even if they do and they get a conviction the crims wont get any punishment. And the govt. have the nerve to proudly claim crime is going down.

Given there's a lag effect to almost any policy, even if the system were changed tomorrow to favour the public rather than the crims, I feel it would stil get worse beofre it gets better.

This reminds of the man who was burgled. This is story I've heard a few times.
A man rings the police as there are people in his shed robbing him. He waits and waits for the police, no one shows. He calls back as the thieves are still there, only to be told they don't have enough staff to come out..
He calls the police again, this time he tells them not to bother as he's shot them both. Within 5 minutes his house is surrounded!
He didn't shoot them, and when asked why he told the police he did, he asks why he was told there weren't enough staff to come out!

I wonder if you'd have been done for assaulting a police officer if you'd run up and hit him in the race? Laughing

Mind you, just getting people going can and does work. Try shouting at them if it's a public place, that gets everyone looking and thiefs do not like being looked at.

My brother got held up at a cash machine a few years back and proceeded to instigate a Dickensian style "Stop thief!" persuit through Edinburghs old town involving everything but a shrilly blown police whistle.

It resulted in so many calls hitting the police switchboard about a thief being persued by a small mob of people that they dragged themselves away from the canteen and went out to investigate. The real-time mobile phone commentary enabled them to have already started their run-up, baton in hand, as the miscreant dropped down over the back wall of a carpark.

He got six years for a second offence of armed robbery (he'd flashed a "knife" which later turned out to be a spoon handle).

You lamp him and knock him out......that's got to end up on You've been framed.

For someone to intervene in a robbery of a bike, or anything for that matter, only a complete moron would expect there to be no violence involved. And though you might be ok with that in itself, the fact is that the police will prosecute you, or at least bang you in a cell for a good 12 hours, as much as the actual criminal, and who wants to subject themselves to that?

I know for a fact I would say something to someone who looked like they were trying to steal a bike, probably before I rang the police, which is one of the things which worries my boyfriend most about me... he's terrified someone is going to pull a knife or something on me one day cos I've tried to be a vigilante. Personally, I don't think the world is as dangerous as the media makes out. People are terrified of something happening to them if they are part of catching a criminal, but I bet revenge from the confines of the prison cell isn't as common as people think.

I was once on a night bus home from Liverpool, some scallies decided they didn't like the colour of my hair (pink) and so got off at my stop and decided to threaten me, I carried on walking but I knew a subway was coming which I HAD to take and was frikkin terrified. Luckily a guy I knew from primary school had also got off the bus and been keeping an eye on them (and me). He caught up with me and escorted me home. Had he not done that god knows what would have happened, I certainly wouldn't have been able to get the police there in time!

Actually reminds me of the time I got jumped on the way back from work one night, had my head caved into the concrete and he kept trying to pull his knife out to stab me, luckily I managed to scarper free before he had chance to do so, but a police station was literally 2 mins round the corner, and the crime had taken place in a safeways carpark, so should have been CCTV'd to the max. So there I go banging on the doors because if I jumped straight in a police car no doubt we'd have tracked him down in minutes given the lay of the land, alas no answer to the door was forthcoming, I shouted through the letter box (the lights were on, and was a TV so much as I could see through the blinded windows), a police car was parked outside. But apparently "Help I've been mugged and beaten up and the guy was trying to stab me" isn't incentive enough to step away from the coffee pot and answer the fucking door. After 5 minutes I gave up, ran down a couple of roads and got some friends together armed to the teeth to go looking instead, we didn't find him sadly but I did manage to recover my car and house keys which had dropped out of my pocket during the scuffle.

So hooray for police doing fuck all when it actually matters, to my now complete lack of surprise.

So this thread leads me to the conclusion, it's up to you to defend yourself....

....but if you do, you will be convicted of defending yourself, apparently a crime more serious than having a crime committed against you.

Shit.

Long story short(ish)
Drunk young scrote in stolen car, crashes into neighbours car outside my house.
First (old) bloke that tries to grab the scrote starts having a heart attack, I grab scrote.
Ambulance turns up pretty quick, sort old bloke out and take him to hospital, then Fire brigade to wash petrol from the road. Then breakdown recovery to remove vehicles.
I'm still holding scrote, he tries a few times to land one on me, till I get fed up of it and lamp him.
Plod turn up getting onto three hours into this, (it's winter and I'm outside in shorts and a t shirt).

First question from plod was to scrote, "has anyone hurt you?"

Try to explain to plod what's gone on, get told to "be quiet".

Tell plod, "fuck it then, I'm off". Go inside, then ten minutes later plod knock on door wanting a statement, "or else".

Tell plod to bugger off.

Plod buggers off.

Actually, last year I was having a coffee in a cafe and saw a few men trying to get through a bicycle lock (no tools).

I phoned the police as I didn't fancy a kick in that day, police didn't arrive, thugs got bored and left.

So what exactly the police expected to happen in that wee PR stunt is beyond me, even if you do call them nothing happens.

to be fair, when i was in high school i had a bicycle stolen. reported it to the police 10 minutes after it had been taken, cop car showed up, took a statement, few days later i saw a group of ding bats riding it, called up 999 (should have used 101 i know) and told them i was following the group with my reported stolen bike.

the operator kept me on the line taking updates on locations, met up with a dispatched cop car and went off the line, got in the back of the car and the end result was i got my bike back.

funnily enough i still have the bike awaiting some repairs as its not been used for several years.

was a total chance encounter spotting them but hey, the result you cant argue with really.

TLDR: i had a bicycle stolen and with my help the police did recover it.

Yea, the police should explain more about the process of giving statements and what is involved etc so people might be more inclined to give their side of what they witnessed.
Imo anyway.

Nearly everyone has a camera phone these days. If they want people to be caught they should encourage people to film crimes and send them the video.

If they can use it to convict bikers speeding, they sure as hell can use it to catch real crims.

Why on Earth would you get involved if you saw someone stealing anything that didn't belong to you, family or friends?

Lock it or lose it.
