Thanks sidewinder for sharing. Thumbs Up
Interesting information that can help us understand that people really don't see us on the road. It's better to be aware of the risk.

Kris.

It's an interesting article.

If flashing lights are supposed to help, it makes me wonder what the law is on having them on you. Obviously it's illegal to fit them to the bike, but what about wearing them when on the bike?

The lighting regs and amendment only talk about vehicles, so go for it. If pedalists and pedestrians can do it, I can't think of any reason why we can't.

Personally I'm well into the SMIDSY weave at the moment.

It really is interesting, but still I find this as just another excuse for people who don't pay attention when they drive.
If people were meant to be drivers, they would exceed the speed of an average car with their own muscles with no machine needed as the rest of our planet does, slow animals don't need laser sharp vision and so on.

However, more and faster you ride on the bike, better at this you get, I mean the perception of speed and space ahead of you. At least that's how I feel it, in the spring I think 60 is a bit fast, well in the summer is 120 just not enough.
Unfortunately, most of people that drive a car take it like something easy and not demanding, which causes they don't see you. It's not they can't, they just don't ''need/want'' to. Also other thing would be, that in a car, you don't feel the pressure of the air which distorts the speed perception. I could go on, we are not born riders, pilots, drivers, astronauts, divers......... I think you get my point.

My theory.

Careful Now. Even if someone is staring straight at you, it's still possible that all they're seeing is a hole in the traffic that they can pull out into.

Watch their front wheels, that's what they're really up to.

I'll do that too. I think the key thing is to build up a series of defence mechanisms and react accordingly. I just had considered the one before, same as the weave on that YouTube clip.

I've just passed and I'm reading road craft also highly Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
I purposefully didn't read it before my test as I felt it might compromise me somehow.

For me things like this is what the theory test should be used for. This should be taught to riders and drivers and then they are tested on the theory of it.
I've just checked my pass sheet from mod 2 and there isn't a section on defensive riding. Maybe there should be.

It's like software development, the earlier you find and fix a problem, the cheaper it is to fix. I.e. things like the above would see savings in NHS etc.

Agreed, the motorcycle theory test is a bad joke. I got a question on the environmental benefits of trams. If that's the punchline, they need to work on their material.

I wear an Electro-Luminescent sash now the nights are drawing in. In my opinion it does help, mainly because people have never really seen it before so it grabs your attention. I'll get a pic tonight of me all lit up on my way home once its dark.

Did anyone see the Christmas Lectures I think it was last year? It was about the brain I seem to remember and the bit about how the eyes work went into the fact that your brain turns off your vision when sweeping across a scene - very interesting! They gave some fact like you're blind for 20% of your waking day or something scary like that - maybe cagers just try to cram as much of that 20% into their commute as possible Very Happy .

Fascinating stuff about the Saccadic masking.

Ultimately though, you don't really need to know the reasons for it, just know that there's a good chance you haven't been seen even when it seems you should have been.

Bikers complain a lot about smidsys but really, although it is the drivers fault, we all know it happens so should ride accordingly. Even just covering the brake as you pass a car coming out of a side road could make the difference between a panicked grab locking the front wheel and a controlled emergency stop. Likewise being mentally prepared to swerve probably massively increases the chances of you doing it succesfully rather than just target fixating yourself into a car door whilst up on the front wheel.

one of my theory questions had the option of "use heated rear windows". it was about riding in the winter and what you should do.

how many bikes do you know that have rear windows? letalone heated ones!

So as I mentioned earlier - I do indeed ride with lights on my body - this is my 2nd winter wearing this, ridden past, and been acknowledged by dozens of police, never had any issues I've also got an arm band thing that glows red. Usually wear that if the weather is a foggy as the red really cuts through the gloom.
Apologies for the poor photo - iPhone and using my mirror to line up the shot doesn't make for great pictures.
I should add this is taken virtually directly under several street lights, its a lot brighter in general riding conditions.

I realise to some I may look like an idiot (cue images of tron guy) but I'd happily light myself up like a Christmas tree if it means the difference between smidsy or a near miss...

I purchased it several years ago from a (pedal) bicycle shop. It's actually marketed towards cyclists and runners.

Company is called Exelite, based in New Zealand : https://www.exelitesafety.com/home.html Although the website has been like that since I bought mine 4 years ago - so they may be now defunct

The store only actually had one in, and I've never seen another one for sale in the UK, sorry.

The armband I have is this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nite-Ize-Marker-LED-Band/dp/B007HJNK2M/ No where near as large as the sash, but very bright.
