Not cross dressers, but rather the 1980/90s musical format.

Bought myself a Sony system today with DAB, iPod/iPhone dock and CD Player.

Wow, what a realisation. DAB and mp3 are absolutely shocking sound wise in comparison.

Probably the only time in my life I have gone back to old technology and been blown away.

I'm currently dusting off my old CD collection! (Didn't even intend to use the CD player btw!)

Peeps don't realise that mp3's are so much smaller because they're compressed. And you can only really compress one thing in a sound file.... the sound itself! The quality is degraded so much.

It's good enough not to realise though until you compare them.
MP3's can be just a couple of megabytes. An example i've just got from my pc is a song with a size of 14mb, and the same song on CD format (typically wav) is about 150mb for a song of about 14 minutes. Obviously everything is relative esspecially when regarding the songs length.

That's some serious degredation of quality!

Sound quality will never beat CD's. CD's are high quality uncompressed audio. All future formats will be compressed, and so will lose quality.

FLAC WAV AIFF these are the main 3 lossless (uncompressed) audio formats.

Winamp will play FLAC files.
[edit] Not sure, but think it's possible to use a codec so windows media player will also play FLAC files.

As the size of storage on media devices increases similarly the speed of internet connections, it's likely to see the rise of uncompressed formats.

FLAC is compressed, it's just a lossless compression algorithm. You don't lose any of the data, so it's a bit like having a playable zip or rar file.

That's purely a matter of personal taste - CDs equal vinyl, it's your choice whether a bit of crackle adds to the sound or not. I own a project debut, everywhere suggests it is the reasonably priced audiophile turntable to have so I'm not anti-vinyl...
<edit> actually it's an rm1.3 - https://www.sumikoaudio.net/project/products/rm1_3.htm maybe I'm more anti vinyl than I thought Wink

But, I'm surprised no-ones suggested SACD or DVD-A. If you appreciate any of the 4 albums that have been released on each format then they'll blow you away with sound quality - they're way better than the human ear can discern and so will never be beaten.

I also still carry around a minidisc player - much better than mp3 on the move Smile

Haha, I still use MD as a location recorder, but those Sony jog dials are a royal pain in the arse.

I'm not anti-CD for suggesting vinyl, every format has its charms of course.

Back to MP3s, if they're 10 times smaller than the original .wav or lossless then that's 128Kbit/s which is crappy. Some converters will save at 256Kbit/s which I prefer - also you can set how quickly/carefully the mp3s are created at so the top settings at 256 are just fine.

In fact I've been ripping my vinyl and saving as MP3s for convenience after remastering, good fun to do.

I rip to mp3 at 320. Anything less and the quality really suffers.

I'd go for CD over vinyl everytime. The hiss and crackle of an LP doesn't add to my listening pleasure.

Also, after riding bikes for over 30 years your hearing tends to suffer a tad.

Ta for that. At least I was barking up the right tree.

CD is at the optimum level that the human ear can use 44k
but a lot of recording is done at higher levels, I use up to 96k esp for vocals
but thats just to allow for better clarity at the recording stage before its mixed down
its also used for DVD A already mentioned
I also tend to keep the files in Wav format for my own playback rather than compressing them in any way

MD were ok 32k does cause some taper in the high and low frequencies though
I preferred DAT as a recording source and I also had a sony DAC converter that worked with betamax video's to record at 44k

as for MP3 considering I only really listen to them on the move and through Phone headphones so the quality isn't that important
