PostPosted: 11:14 - 12 Nov 2012    Post subject: Policeman with hand held camera.......GOT ME ! Reply with quote

Hi

I was riding through Eltham this morning, and got a plod pointing one of the hand held guns at me, as I approached. 40mph limit, and I was probably doing 50-55, however he lowered the gun as I approached him, as I dropped speed to 40 as saw him.

He didnt pull me over and didnt turn round to catch plate as I rode past (at 40mph)

Does this mean I wont get anything in post ?

Do they normally clock you and tug you ? Or is the camera kitted out to scan, assess and take pic ?

If he did turn round to get plate, surely cant take pic of bike moving away as wouldnt calculate the speed as I'm heading the wrong direction ?!?!

Thoughts ?

Joolz

Just wait two weeks.

No point getting your knickers in a twist now for no reason.

Thumbs Up

Were there any other vehicles around you, even on the other carriageway? If so the copper can't reliably prove it was you that was speeding.

There's a chance you just weren't going fast enough to interest him considering your speedo probably overreads, so your 50-55mph could be 45-50mph or so. Especially on a bike where we seem to sometimes get away with a little extra speed before being pulled over (don't rely on that, etc).

If it's a handheld they will usually pull you over there and then so you'll most likely hear nothing more. I'd like to think they sometimes give you credit for spotting them early as well, as it proves you're at least paying attention unlike a lot of cagers that'll just sail straight past at well over the limit in a virtual trance, they are the ones that deserve the ticket.

They usually stop you there and then with a handheld one (or get a car further up the road to tug you).

Occasionally they send you a snotty letter.

As always, if they haven't posted you anything in the next 14 days, you're home and dry.

They can get you in either direction, and by the time you've seen them and anchored on....it's too late.

Plod with hand held Cams will usually pull you over, but not always.

Having said that, my money is on nothing coming of it at that speed. You'll just have to sweat it out for 14 days.

After I went past, I stayed at 40mph incase there was another car further up road waiting to tug me, but nothing. The guy holding the gun did look across at me, and lower the gun as I went past. However I stayed in the outside lane, so he would be hard pressed to expect me to pull across other lane and turn off, when other traffic pulling off from lights was coming up behind me.

I nodded at him and raised fingers from left bar as a " cheers "

Smile

I'll wait couple of weeks, and then change pants. (thong) Wink

Cheers all

Out of interest, what makes you think that?

A while back, a motorist was hauled before the courts for flashing a ''V'' sign towards a scamera van. He wasn't speeding but he was charged with not being in control of his vehicle (or something like that).

I meant as a thanks, rather than a V.

He likely lowered it to check the speed on the screen below the scope.

I was of the impression that for those they pull you over there and then.

Several sources but here is one (page 13):
https://www.motoringfirst.co.uk/MotorOffenceBible/Downloads/MF%20-%20Manufacturer%20Guidelines%20For%20LTI%2020-20.pdf

Another showing that any movement of the beam can be inaccurate:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/insideout/southwest/series7/speed-cameras.shtml

Another (we don't know if it was RADAR or LASER, hence the surrounding traffic point):
https://www.speed-trap.co.uk/Accused_Home/How_it_Works/How_it_works_Home.htm

If a NIP does arrive I think it reasonable to ask what the reflective area used as the target was, particularly if riding with headlight on. There is not a lot of reflective, flat surface on most bikes/riders (well not on me anyway). Very Happy

My understanding is that these new handheld cameras can confirm your speed from around a kilometer away so the fact he put it down as you neared was probably so he could get his pencil out to note your reg plate once you passed him...

however another thing I was told is that motorcycles are fiendishly hard to get readings off as they do not have any decent sized flat areas on the front like cars, so you'll probably be fine.

Fendishly hard not, I've been done by this method, they point it at your lid.
On another occation the copper stopped me and to my supprise, let me have a go on the gun.
I felt a right prat standing on the exit of Euston underpass pointing it at taxis and the like, but he let me off so me playing along must have paid off.
