Hi there all, new to the forum, and as such new to the roads! I decided after a lifetime of pounding pavement without so much as a car license that it was time to take my cbt and get myself a little scooter. Honestly mostly for trips back and forth visiting my very unwell mother as i go most days as is but aside from that just for fun!. Anyway long story short, i passed my cbt yesterday and loved it. so whats the problem you may ask? Im about 5.10 and 25 stone of burning love! I took my cbt on a silly little 50 cc scooter and it was fine just pretty uncomfortable after the first half an hour.. any suggestions on what kind of scooter ( up to a 125cc as thats all im allowed on cbt) would be best suited for my size? im in the south east of england and being my first runaround didnt want to spend too much- £1500 is really my limit- and i would prefer to buy brand new as its my first vehicle- and a long overdue treat to myself! have come across some no branded scooters that seem reasonably priced but only online so would prefer to know they are going to fit my gargantuan butt on the seat!

I would forget about a scooter, especially a brand new one and go for a second hand 125 motorcycle. Will fit in your budget better and you wont look like this:

Problem with that sir is ive not ridden gears before and definitley for now would be more comfortable on a pull back and go,pherhaps later on when ive gained some road experiance, as this wasnt just my first time on a bike, it was my first time on anything, not even rode a pushbike in several years.

It does not take long to get used to the gears on a bike and your CBT covers the riding of one. Trust me, you wont look back when you get the swing of geared bikes.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Cars-Motorcycles-Vehicles-/9800/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=honda+varadero+125

Something like one of those would suit a man of your stature much better than a twist off piss off bike.

Where in the SE are you.

Shocked

As mentioned before, a geared bike will probably fit you better, but it's really tough to start on. I was similar to you (hadn't even been on a pushbike in years), so I started on a scooter. I had a Honda SH 125 that was able to take my wife & I at the same time (adds up to about your weight). We only tried this around a parking lot once, cuz I hadn't passed my test yet, but it seem to handle the weight OK. It also has bigger wheels, giving it motorcycle-like stability.

I'm a poofteenth under six feet tall and a poofteenth under 25 stone, go for the gears, every time. If you go for a 50cc scooter, you may as well go for a mobility rider and that probably ain't what you are about.

The gears really aren't that difficult to get hold of and believe me, you will fall in love with it.

I've not had experience with one personally but a guy that comes into where I work had one before he passed his test. I saw the thing and I couldnt believe it wasnt the bigger 650 version. Thing was tall and looked solid.

As for ridability he said it was fantastic.

Ok great well i think i might go and take a look at it today and sit myself on it and see how it feels, I totally understand what you are all saying about gears, dont feel that im disregarding your comments, im just a bit wary, will def consider it if i dont find a scooter thats comfortable. Scooter just feels a lot less daunting, im sure regardless ill be sh***ng myself on my first ride out alone!

oh never thought of that.. ill come back in two years when my cbts ran out and im thinner.. Rolling Eyes

Lol.. joking aside.. I was never under the impression that you have to fit into a weight catagory to enjoy two wheels..

Actual worthwhile advice about scooters.. would be greatly appreciated.

I'm of the thick-skinned variety too Wink but do listen to the advice on gears, it will make everything both more enjoyable and easier to find a suitable ride.

At 25 stone there's only one way to go really, get a big bike licence and then a Harley. About the ony people who actually manage to look cool on a Harley are the big'uns Smile

Forget scooters you will get the hang of gears in an afternoon.

Everyone's forgetting the first big step if you've taken your CBT on a scooter: You need to get the geared bike home after you bought it... This was insurmountable to me. I knew no one who rode bikes, so couldn't even ask someone to get it home for me. I guess I could have asked the dealer to deliver it for me, but then I'd be learning gears on my road (on a hill).

The way I finally overcame that was to take a DAS course, after I had been riding the scooter for six months and 1,500 miles. At the end, I didn't pass (didn't expect to), but I now was well familiar with gears and was able to buy a CBF and spend another six months (and 3,500 miles) getting well comfortable before passing my test.

Suggestion: Go back to the school where you took the CBT and book a three-hour lesson on gears. By the end of that, you'll be good enough to go buy the Honda Varadero that you really should be riding.

One thing i will add is that i did my cbt on a little old 50cc scooter and while i might have looked a bit of a dipstick on it ( who cares what anyone else thinks) it was fine to ride and got it up to the grand old limit of the 30 it was restricted to lol. So really.. im thinking of whats going to be comfy for short rides ( 6 mile return trip daily) and just poodling around town. One day i most likely WILL go ahead and get the dream motorcycle ( im not much into harleys- still trying to work out what i do like) Im also not overly tall so leg room wasnt an issue on the little 50, just trying to find a sturdy machine that isnt going to fall apart too soon, looks nice and doesnt look too flimsy when im sat on it. I do like the idea of doing the gears training and will most definitley be looking into that probably after ive had a few months learning the roads on an auto, my confidence is at a low! Thankyou for all the feedback so far, enjoying the forum a lot and look forward to learning much more from you all.

oh how i wish i wasnt too big for a vespa

My brother in law has a 125 Varadero. It's a really nice bike for a 125. Big and seems to have good power for a 125 somehow. Certainly more than my daughters SR125.

Same with most 17 year olds when they take your test... your never to old to learn new tricks... try booking an hour free session on a geared 125cc https://www.geton.co.uk/content/whats-it-all-about

I spent a year on a scooter before I rode my YBR home. Lesson on gears, then straight out into London traffic with second hand purchase. Was a little daunting, but no worse really than first time on the road with a scooter and I had built up the traffic sense from London riding, so I only had to deal with one thing at a time.

Nothing wrong with 125cc scooter first in London especially, IMNSHO. Still think scooters are better in London.
