Yeah so the subject tells you that this really isn't much use to anybody I just thought I'd write it.

So coming home from Jct 32 outlet place at Castleford on my Z, my mate in his Supra. Pootling along a national speed limit around 70 mph and I felt my front wheel go a touch loose. What I mean by that is it felt like it was slippery and I thought "Oh shite I'm gonna die in a minute, best slow down".

So I did and my mate overtook me. about half a mile down the road he pulls to the left for me to overtake because he didn't know where we were going. This was in a 40 mph zone and I'm not a hooner, though saying that means nothing here. He slowed to just above 30 and I just twisted the throttle a touch, only at 4k revs so nothing silly, just to get some speed up to overtake and get back in the lane.

During my overtake I hit a white line, or cats eye, can't be too sure and the back wheel went from right beneath me! my arse fell out. Don't know what I did but I managed to stay on the thing. I think I closed the throttle and let the bike rattle the handlebars side to side while I attempted to ride it like a bucking bronco until it stopped.

That was my first experience of anything like that in 6 months. This resulted in my confidence being totally humped and I didn't take any corners at more than 20 because every time I leaned just a bit my stomach gave me the same feeling of the back wheel going.

I've never been glad to get off the bike when I got home before.

so yeah ... Kl stry br0

Sounds like a long stretch of spilled diesel.

Check your bike over to make sure it's okay.

After that get straight out there on some roundabouts and start leaning until you're easily leaning over a respectable amount.

If you don't get comfortable again with leaning now you'll build up a mental block in your mind which will be harder to overcome in a few weeks/months time and you'll forever hate corners. So get out and ride Thumbs Up

As already stated, could have been diesel, use all of your senses when riding, including your sense of smell.

I don't seem to be able to smell diesel on the roads, even significant amounts.

Unless there is literally standing diesel (like a puddle of it), rather than just a film on the surface, I can't smell it. I've even seen some on a quiet road, got out my car to check it and still can't smell it unless I get my nose really up close.

Yet my uncle used to ride and he could smell it with his visor shut.

One thing I can tell with my nose is if my bike is running stoich or not, can tell even if its ever so slightly lean or rich. Not much I can do about it at the time apart from check the choke.

Check tyre condition and especially the pressure.
That's a usual cause of handling problems when you get people checking suspension, forks, headstock and the like.

Best thing you can do if you lose traction on a wheel is nothing. The bike wants to travel upright in a straight line - you're the only real variable. Chop the throttle and you lighten the rear wheel further.

I think it was Keith Code said 'god help the biker with quick reactions and a strong back'.

You had a scare, but you`re still in one piece Thumbs Up
Check all is good with the bike, and then back out there before you lose your bottle.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Yeah thanks for the tips guys!

I know I need to get back out and MTFU. I'll make sure to check over my pressures and stuff next time I venture out.

As for the I'm either gonna die or not comment. I would like to see past 25 though, I value my own little piece of this universe and want to see more of it before I splat out on a road Razz

To be honest I just wanted to write down what happened because the internet is full of useless stuff so I might as well add to it. AND also find out if I did anything wrong and to check on stuff.

Thanks again

ZZR's are absolute bastards when riding with underinflated and/or worn tyres. My own nearly spat me off a couple of weeks back for no apparent reason. I checked the tyre pressures when i got home and the rear was down to 30psi from 41.
They are known to track badly on worn tyres, so a combination of worn tyres and low pressures is likely to be your problem. Also check front and rear wheel bearings, and your steering head bearings too. When you are happy with all those, THEN you should go out for a ride again, and try to regain your confidence in the bike.
I have complete faith in the handling of mine, but i now check tyre pressures regularly.
Hope you get sorted soon.

Don't say things like that! Shocked

I've been bricking it for the past couple of weeks. Especially on one particular stretch of road (Glen Helen), that is unlit, up hill, has a lot of tight bends and is lined with trees either side.

Was even more worrying when the traffic coming out of the above described road started flashing me as a warning, as I was entering it. Neutral

If your rear starts slipping from too much power and you do nothing, you will crash.

I've spent the past week touring the west coast of Ireland. It's wet every day, often poor road surface, sometimes leaves on the road, etc.; country roads 5 hours a day. I've slipped on the rear several times over the past 1500 miles or so this week; spun up on a dual carriageway accelerating away from a roundabout; pulling out of muddy verges after stops; and going around tight corners for bridges not aligned with the modern course of the road. No crashes. If you maintain the same throttle input after the rear has started to slip, you'll lowside. If you chop, especially too late, you'll probably highside. If you ease off a little soon enough, you'll recover after more or less fishtailing.

Static friction is higher than dynamic friction. Once you've started to slip, you need to ask even less of the tyre to recover traction than would have been enough for it not to slip in the first place.
