20hp is a good fiqure for a 2t 125cc, I have a 200cc Yamaha single that makes around 30 bhp and its very peaky and in the real world not a nice machine to ride so I would rather have it making only 20-25 bhp to make it useable in the real world.

Early RS125s made over 28hp in the magazine road tests, so 20 is pretty poor ('87 model Aprilia AF1, the first ones they imported, made 21hp). I would also say they are pretty useable, and personally I like to have torque to keep on increasing as revs go up (rather than torque dropping away and just relying on revs to make the power increase).

I certainly wouldnt trust a full blown rs125 to get me any distance so would never use one as they are pointless when tuned to the hilt, at the end of they day they will just explode leaving a hefty repair bill.

I have used them for long distances quite a few times. Where I used to live my best ever time for the journey to my mothers (~165 miles) was on a 1988 Aprilia AF1 Sintesi.

All the best

No, the Honda RS125 is their race bike, and no relation (except in the minds of the marketing department maybe) to the NSR125 road bike.

All the best

Do you mean which RS? The Honda by a long way. Honda were calling race 2 strokes "RS" in the 1980s. The Aprilia RS125 came out in 1992.

All the best

You could buy this years bike and get a decent result in the British 125 championship on it, pop to the shop? I think not.

They do a 250 too:

A 2000 -2004 rs250r could be had for around 3k and up to 6k for a couple of years younger, they are very powerful @ 90+bhp standard and weight less than a cg125, they are more than a match for a modern 600c four in terms of top speed and will waste the 600 on handling and braking.

Hi

How good are you at engine rebuilds? Suspect the crank is meant to be replaced at under 1000 mile intervals.

All the best

You would nearly need 3 complete engines at any one time and a very large wallet not to mention the best of tyres, chains and sprockets.

As a track bike, well if there were 3 sessions, you;d probably need 3 engines, 3 sets of tires and a team of mechanics capable of changing them between sessions, along with some set-up guys capable of setting up an interoperating telemetry to help set-up your bike, otherwise the thing is a complete waste and you'd be better off with a 600.

Yes 250's are quicker, but you need a lot of guys behind the scenes or they will fail every time.

I fitted my 08' RS with an Arrow pipe and everything else standard (including the can!). It was seriously quick up to around 75, but struggled past 90. I managed an indicated 95 with some room left but always eased off in fear of the engine going bang! The guy I sold it to, who is a good bit lighter than me, said he had an indicated 103mph.

Miss that bike so much. The burst of power when the PV opened was just fantastic and smoking all the neds in their corsas off the lights with your L plates on was so satisfying!. I wouldnt swap it for my 750 4t though!

The highest speed for a MotoGP motorcycle in 125 cc category is 249.76 km/h (155.19 mph) by Valentino Rossi in 1996 for Aprilia and the top speed in the history of MotoGP is 349.288 km/h (217.038 mph), set by Dani Pedrosa riding a Repsol Honda RC212V 800 cc during Free Practice 1 at the 2009 Italian motorcycle Grand Prix.

From Wikipedia. So the absolutely tuned to within an inch of its life MotoGP will do 150mph.

I very much doubt you're going to see anything near that on a 125cc road-legal Aprilia built for daily use.

P.S. I realise this is an old thread, just wanted to throw that in there.

Hi

Surprising how little they have changed in speed. The 125 twin I mentioned earlier in this thread (quite a few years ago) was just a normal one and not a special factory bike and managed 142mph. Although I suppose that was geared for top speed which they probably don't bother with on most races.

All the best

Not really that amazing when you consider that 125cc GP bikes were capable of 145mph 45 years ago!

In 1967 Honda raced the RC149, a 5 cylinder inline 4 stroke with a top speed of 130mph.

In the same year Suzuki were running their RS67U, a four cylinder V4 2 stroke capable of 145mph.
