Has anyone here had a kidney removed or knows of someone who has?
If so how has it effected your day to day life and how long was the recovery after the op?

Ta.

A good mate of mine had one taken out due to cancer and didn't have any adverse effect, my dragon in law lived for year's with one and when she was alive you would never have known. I don't think it's a problem tbh especially nowadays with all the advances Thumbs Up

All the best

A friend of mine suffered from complete kidney failure a few years back and led a pretty normal life while on a form of dialysis, he has subsequently had a transplant and is doing OK living with one. Just has to be careful about what he drinks etc.

A suprisingly large number of people don't have two 100% working kidneys anyway, or at least thats what he told me!

Can you smoke weed and drink with only 1 kidney?

I'm pretty sure not but i'm guessing there's an amount that is safe.

Whilst I've technically got two, one is significantly fucked. No impact on daily life.

PM me any questions. My missus has almost 100% renal failure. Although you can function normally with 1. Many people do. Don't forget that people donate kidneys to relatives and live a full life.

You're looking at 2 weeks in hospital and 3 months to reach full recovery.

I had one out at the age of 9, or thereabouts.

No adverse effects whatsoever from only having one. The only downside is if any one of my relatives needs one, I don't have a spare.

This.

After the accident in July I have damaged one of my kidneys badly, its working at <%10.
They are monitoring it for the next few months, but if the blood supply to it gives in they are going to take it out.
Thanks all for your advice, and Flip I will definately be PMing you.

Kinda off topic, but why did we evolve over millions of years with two kidneys, if one will suffice?

Well it's always good to have a spare innit. Maybe evolution is currently working on a second of every organ, we just don't know it yet Razz

Multiple redundancy. Same reason you have two eyes, ears, air intakes, lungs, arms, legs etc. From an evolutionary standpoint a species that has backups for vital organs survives better in the wild than one without.

Yes I'm running on one kidney have been for the last eight years. I had a tumor the size of a golf ball in my left one so it had to go. So long as the remaining one functions up to scratch there should be now problems. Certain pain killers are to be avoided, remind your 'Quack' if prescribed, reduce or preferably cease alcohol intake that stuff gives kidneys a hard time. I'm also a cancer survivor, spinal surgery survivor, and eye surgery survivor, anybody wanna know anything about that lot come back to me !.

At the time he had it removed, my bro was the youngest person the in the UK (about 6 months) to have the procedure and he's 58 next birthday.

Never had any trouble and his remaining one has never been 100%.

I discovered just before Christmas that I have Chronic Kidney Disease which isn't as bad as it sounds. I have between 60-90% kidney function across the two kidneys and to be honest without being tested for it among various other things I would never have known.

A friend of mine also has CKD and his function drops to below 25% across both kidneys and he still drinks like a fish.

I suppose its a matter of its not as scary as it seems, it shocked me when I first discovered I had CKD but the only change I've made is to avoid Ibuprofen.

Just echo whats already been said really, My brother found out he had kidney failure at 19, 14 years later he had a transplant (last year) after being on dialysis for only two months.

Throughout it all has lived a normal life, Just slighty careful with what he eats and drinks. And has to take a huge amount of pills each day due to anti-rejection etc etc.
