Just been offered one of these for £500, could probably get him down to £450.

Its a 1992, has a sports exhaust fitted and 10 months MOT

He's currently hooning around on it so definitely runs.

Sort of looks like this
https://p2m.mbike.com/000/002/967/76493207_m.jpg

Haven't had a good look at it yet, all I know is the dummy fuel tank has a scuff in it, will find out mileage later.

Only costs a fraction more than the GS for insurance, so odds are in its favour that way.

For that kind of money can I really go wrong with an FZR?

Providing it doesn't need tyres/brakes/chain/sprocket/fork seals/engine overhaul in the next few thousand miles I'd say no, you can't really go wrong!

I used to have one and the only real issues I had with it was the reg/rec went on it. However that was easily replaced with an R6 version. The tyres are also a pain in the arse for that bike too as the rear wheel is an 18".

Other than them two things its a cracking bike providing you do the usual checks before buying.

Watch out for 2nd gear problems.

When you go to look have a test ride and red line it in 2nd a couple of times to see if you have problems up shifting to 3rd e.g unable to shift.

apart from that, nice bike. Wish mine was more reliable, if so i would have kept it!

Found out the mileage is 32,0000.

Had a little look at a buyers guide,

Apparently gearbox bearings tend to shit themselves at 20k if ridden hard (being told this one hasn't seen a track in its life, hopefully thats true Razz).

Also mentions clutch slip and replacing the plates every 5k miles, Confused what are they made of cheese?

@Rncv: usually do if I get a test ride, seems to be the norm advice for Thundercats and Fazers too something about them Yamaha gearboxes.

@SimonB Not too sure how long I'll keep it for if I get it (probably just the winter) but what tyres did you use?

As for reg/rec I have an 05 R6 one sitting in my drawer that was meant to go on my CBR 400 so no worries there.

I did roughly ~5k miles from when I got mine to when I sold it. Didn't change the clutch plates and the clutch still felt fine.

Mine had 38k on the clocks, 2nd gear was starting to go but I got it as a £250 project so that's what you get.

Mine was a 1990 3HE model. Bought for £625, rode for a year (taking it up 10k miles or so), all I ever did was replace a split link, oil and filter change and replaced both tyres. Sold it for £450, and that was with alot of things needing doing.

Mine also had an 18" wheel, and tyres are NOT a problem to find. I fitted Avon roadriders and they are superb in the wet and dry.

For that price you can't go wrong. Thumbs Up

You could get a foxeye model for that, don't waste your money.

10months MOT for £450? Thats not a waste. And how long would the OP have to wait for a foxeye to come at that price? Just saying.

Not really on the look out for an FZR, just this ones cropped up local and seemed relatively cheap for the condition its in, probably be used as winter and track hack if it runs well.

(The Foxeye does look a much better bike mind if I was on the lookout I would prioritise one of them.)

If I can't work him down to £450 then I'm holding off, the lad is desperate as he needs to pay his mortgage so maybe.

Good little bike. The engine gets a bit frantic at 'higher' speeds, its about 70 - 80 BHP so needs working hard. But, because it is in a much lower state of tune the engine seems to be very solid. The rear wheel can be replaced by a TDM 750 17'' very easily, if you need to know how just shout.
The God awful coffin tank can be replaced by a Kwak Z- 9 R tank, eaily done and really make the thing look very modern.
Its a wippet on the road, very light and very robust. I was quite impressed that something so venerable could perform so well. Then I picked up a ZZR600... Enough said.

Hi

Had one for a while, although suspect if a 1992 bike it will have the single headlight like mine (they carried on making the 3HE until the very late 1990s for the US market, having switched back to twin round lights).

2nd gear is weak, but having said that mine is up to about 55000 and the gearbox is fine. The clutch is weak and gets VERY nasty when it gets hot. Plus point is that changing the plates is simple.

Mine eats clutch cables. Routing is a bit tight and they seem to get heavy after about a year of use. I suspect what has happened is that the cable inner has worn through the lining and got to the cable outer.

Mine did eat a regulator / rectifier.

Fairings are virtually non available 2nd hand. Front calipers seize up (but are not that difficult to free off).

Rear tyre is an 18" jobby, and on a later bike there is a wider wheel to take a 150/60 18 tyre. Only one I know of still made is a Bridgestone and not cheap. To the extent I am toying with fitting and earlier wheel and using a more commonly available 130 rear tyre.

Exhausts rot. Brake disks can warp (common to floating disks on Yamahas until the late 1990s).

Pillion seat is just about useable.

All the best

Keith
