I sympathise with innocent people getting caught up in it all. At the same time I think that Israeli, can't afford to show weakness. Given their being surrounded by enemies.

That said, time has shown that Israelis are pretty good at fighters; I wouldn't fuck with them and think I'd get away with it.

Bystanders die, with a 30:1 ratio of Palestinians to Israelis.

This has been going on for a very, very long time*, and every time someone calls the Israelis to task on it, the answer is either "you're an anti-semitic neo-nazi, I'm going to tell America of you", or (my personal favourite) "God said we should do this".

*This particular argument predates Christianity by at least a millenium. No amount of hand-wringing on behalf of Western powers is going to change it; the Romans gave up on them - I don't see the UN having any greater success. Realistically, the only way that Israel will ever be convinced to stop acting like a dick is if a much bigger nation stomps on them. It genuinely wouldn't surprise me if these prats are the ones hat start the third world war. Of course if they do, they will deny all culpability, because accounting for one's actions is for losers.

For years now, Israel has played the bully boy of the midde east. It takes land off the Palestinians ( an already displaced people thanks to British intervention in setting up the state of Israel) and squeezes them into an ever decreasing state. When the Palestinians get fed up with starvation, fuel and electricity shortages, poor medical facilities, etc and lob the odd mortar at Israel they respond with heavy handed retaliation and scream anti- semitism to all who dare criticise.
As previously mentioned this has been going on for most of our lifetimes and every so often some foreign ambassador will stick their oar in and draft a peace treaty which both sides agree to disagree on and so it continues.
Things however are on the change and as OP put it, if there's ever going to be WWIII it's going to kick off here. The Arab world has spent the last few years determining its future direction and as each country finds common ground with its newly 'democratic' Muslim neighbours this is almost certain to lead to general distaste with Israel. More so that that previous stabilising force in the Middle East, Syria, has one or two other pressing things in its current agenda!
Our own Mr Hague has already blamed Hamas for the current escalation, it would seem our nation is settling down on the Israeli front which should pitch us nicely against most of the folk in Europe, happy days!

The USA has posted a ship off of the Israel coastline, supposedly not offering any intel to the Israelis though.

I'm sure this will blow over eventually as per usual, but honestly if there is ever a WWIII it will start this way, I'm sure nobody thought much of the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand at the time either...
