The home office is to plough an extra £15m into police cameras that can read car number plates.
The technology can check up to 3,000 vehicles an hour of cars travelling up to 100mph.

A pilot scheme by 23 police force had led to a dramatic increase in arrests, home secretary David Blunkett said.

People driving with no tax or insurance, stolen cars, all this sort of thing it can be used to detect. It's more than helpful in those regards, I'd rather get as many of the dodgy drivers off the roads as possible. 15m is peanuts in terms of national budgets anyhow.

While I to some degree agree, I also think that we are taking more and more responsibility away from the actual police and putting our trust in technology.
Also, is there not 'worse' crimes that they can be trying to solve with this £15m? Plenty of stuff goes on that has significantly worse direct effect on people's lives, that the police are happy to ignore because it's 'easy' to catch someone without tax and that's one place higher on a league table. While a mugger might actually run away or something Smile.

G - my interpretation of what you have said has led me to believe that you are contradicting yourself...

Yes, maybe the new technology is taking some responsibility and reliance from the police, but maybe this would eventually mean that the police can then use their time for the other crimes that you mention?

But they don't though, do they. Instead they employ lower paid 'Community Officers' to roam high streets, policing on foot. Rolling Eyes Hmm yea just what we need, inexperienced civvies with badges and a complex, oh and with fanny-fark-all respect...

Yea that should bring the yobs on our streets to their knees.. Rolling Eyes Purrrlleeese.

Oh and cameras will only ever catch people who register their vehicles or have correct numberplates on them. Rolling Eyes

Apparently obese people cost the NHS about 3 million.
I think this camera should detect how fat the driver is and fine them! Twisted Evil Thumbs Up

Dumb asses with credit cards are a main reason we are in shit for money, they need to get some back i guess.

What do you mean by that?

And £3million is roughly 5 pence for each UK citizen.

Cameras that catch uninsured or untaxed drivers are very useful.

I would be all for having them in lots of places, untaxed drivers are usually uninsured too and that usually means very dangerous and idiotic - as its usually chavs or criminals who drive without tax and insurance.

I was under the impression that the dvla had sorted this problem out by fining anyone automatically if you don't renew it?

Or is it a case of they get the fine but dont pay any attention to it?

Plenty of people do drive without tax and insurance that don't quite fall into your categories (presuming you don't say people are criminals because they drive without tax).
A lot of them drive/ride a lot more carefully than those fully paid up because they are aware of the implications of their actions.

Tin; bah, I'm a hypocrite :p.
However, unfortunately, I suspect it would just lead to reduced police budgets, rather than more police dedicated towards other areas.
The attitude I have seen from the local police is that they would rather not know about 'hard' crimes that might require some police work.... while I got the impression that having a 'tax van' along the road from is considered a worthy use of 16+ police officers, other officials, about 10 police vehicles including an unmarked car. They give a £30 fine and don't check insurance (not me, but know someone else that got done), so unlikely they make any money in comparison to the amount spent, or actually stop anyone being naughty. I suspect it will up their league table position though Smile.
Glad to know they're catching these dangerous white collar workers popping into town on their lunch break who are obviously really bad people because they don't have tax Thumbs Up. Razz (yes, that is a joke, before it's commented on)

Unfortunately all these measures only prevent the very casual offenders. The career criminals will probably just slap someone else's numberplate on and carry on.

Loply:
If you're wanting a system like this, I believe one is being developed/seriously considered where by many cameras will be placed around.
They are obviously been sold as being used to prevent car theft, tax evasion etc. They will be used in conjunction with a chip in all number plates to verify the system.
However it will be very easy to use them to check speed as will be realised when they have been 'accepted' I suspect.
So, do 71mph average on the motorway and a fine drops through your door.
All well and good, a lot less accidents due to 'speeding'; though I suspect a lot more because people consider themself so safe now.

However what if someone finds out how to abuse the system? An incredibly powerful surveillance system covering all of our country Thinking.
