Hi All,

My FZS600 '99 has developed a rattling noise at tickover recently. It's always been a little touchy with cold starts, particularly if we've had heavy rain, but never been rattly like this.

The sound seems to be coming from the top of the engine, near where the Carbs are. You can hear it in this video (can't see anything as it was recorded in the dark): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMO4OkonUz0

Any ideas on what might be wrong, and how to fix it? I've investigated the process for changing the cam-chain, in case it's that, in the haynes manual and it seems to suggest basically stripping the whole engine apart to get at it, which I'd rather avoid, for obvious reasons.

I can't say if it's the cam-chain but I changed a cam-chain on a CB 500 by just splitting the chain and tying the new one to the old one to get it into place.

Easy and never had a bother with it.

As Rob said, they all do that. Normally a hearty blast sorted mine for a bit.

That said it started around the 15k miles mark and carried on with no problems until written off @ 38k

Usually around the £100 mark to sort if it bothers you that much though.

Well, just started recently so it should live for a while yet. It's at about 38k already and as I said, the rattlyness has only just started recently.

I will get it sorted but if it's not something that requires urgency I will probably leave it until cash is a bit less tight.

I think it's the chain, my GPz sounded much worse, like if you put rocks into a blender Smile Check this: https://s970.beta.photobucket.com/user/RhynoCZ/media/New%20exhaust%20system/Video-0001.mp4.html?sort=3&o=0 The engine was warm, after a ride.

It also could be valves, when was the last time you've checked clearances?

Sounds like my FZR when it's cold. Did it at 21k when I got it, now at 27k and it's the same. It's something I should sort really but it's not serious yet so I'm not going to bother.
