I lost one of the r-clips for the brake pad retaining pins on my ER6's front brakes. I have it bodged for the moment with a bent paperclip, but will want to replace it very soon with something that won't corrode.

Trouble is, the OEM clip (part no. 43084-003) is about 2GBP from Kawasaki, not including shipping.

Where can I get a lifetime supply (20 ought to do it) of tiny stainless steel r-clips at a more reasonable price?

Everywhere I Google for r-clips, they are all either enormous or extortionate. Am wondering if I shouldn't purchase some stainless steel wire instead.

I got some small stainless R clips from Steve's Stainless. It was on his stall at a Stafford Show so I could see what I wanted. He does mail order as well, you'll just have to know the metal diameter to make sure you get the right ones, 1.2mm probably.

Any model shop that sells rc cars will sell these. They won't be stainless tho....just std off the shelf galv or nickel finish same as the eBay ones by the looks. If you have a local engineering supply shop they should also be able to get hold of them for you......I'd expect to pay about 50p each if they have them in stock.

We call them Clevis clips (for clevis pins!!) at work - same thing though.

We use ours for 9mm d oven hinge pins - if that's the sort of size you need let me know and i'll stick some in an envelope for you, got hundreds of the things!

Why do you require the longevity of stainless steel? Caliper pins aren't made of stainless so why would you wish to use ''R'' clips that are made of stainless?
You will more than likely have disposed of the bike a long time before the new galvanised ''R'' cips have corroded.

Or just use a new split pin every time.

Maybe you're right. But brakes are safety critical and right in the line of fire for all the muck that comes off the road. Peace of mind is worth something too.

Mild steel is about four time stronger than stainless and doesn't become brittle over time. You are defeating your own argument.

The safest, strongest thing to use in that application would be a galvinazed mild steel split-pin.

I wasn't really making an argument, more stating my perspective that I now understand was ignorant. I had more fear of corrosion than strength (the clip isn't load-bearing, as I understand it) or brittleness. I'll get some tiny split pins instead. Thanks.

FWIW. Get a small nail and stick it in a jar of salt water, it'll take years before you can snap it in two. The crappiest metal will last more than long enough for the sort of abuse that it will get on a bike. Stainless is fine. Used as a R clip there isn't any load on it so the discussion of strength is insignificant. Any crud will clean off easily enough and it will always be removable. It is just a matter of cost.

Pretty sure I've used the smallest size from those R-Clip selection boxes you get on brakes fine.

Probably not the cheapest option but a damn sight cheaper than the original Brembo ones. I brought THESE off ebay.
