Tyre plug problems

I got my front tyre plugged a few months ago, but there's a problem. The top part of the plug seems to have come out, but the tyre is holding pressure fine.

Not sure if I should get a new tyre or if it's ok to leave it as it is.

I'll try and get a picture of the problem later.

I would personally recommend that you replace it mate. Not from any past experience, but I don't wanna be reading a crash post from you (or anyone else really) anytime soon.

That looks like a Dunlop tyre to me, but I've got a part-worn BT010 lying around in the garage that you can make use of if you're strapped for cash at the moment.

I've spoken to the person who fitted it and had a very trusted local mechanic look at it and they both reckon it should be fine due to the way the plug is designed.
I asked them both if they would leave it as it is if it were their bike, both said yes.

I'm still trying to decide what to do about it, on the one hand the consequences of the plug failing would be catastrophic.
But then again two experienced and trusted mechanics have told me that they wouldn't change the tyre if it was them, and I could really do without the cost and hassle of changing tyres.

Thanks very much for the offer Tin, that’s very kind of you, should I decide to change the tyre I might well take you up on that.
Although I'm not sure if that tyre combination would be legal. Confused

Both tyres would be radials so it is legal.

Are you sure it's come out? Not just wearing slower than the rest of the tyre.

If that is the case, just skimming the exposed bit with a knife should be fine.

If it was a professionaly fitted one it should have a 'mushroom' bit inside that hasn't got a chance of coming out.

Change the tyre. One of my tyres I had fixed did this, and I had it fixed again, but it did go flat in the end, so I got a new tyre to save all the hassle etc....

So did you have the tyre replugged and then it went flat?

I was advised not to have the tyre replugged it's illegal and generally a bit dodgy.

Yes Danny, it was repluged (free) and within a few months it kept going down, no other holes / leaks could be found, not even the valve. In the end I decided to get a new tyre, got a deal on the tyre, 3rd off retail price due to the plug fix not working.
