HMRC would like to be able to ignore the speed limit pleasethankyou, since revenue is more important than children or kittens.

Don't worry though, they'll only be allowed to do it if they complete the same "high-speed training" that has resulted in the safe and careful coppers that we've all come to know and love.

I guess it's not so much a rule as a guideline.

Well yes tearing round above the speed limit kills kittens, as everyone knows. But killing kittens is fine so long as the state says so. Covert surveillance of organised crime, there is nothing particularly covert about speeding. Won't someone please beat HMRC about the head about increased carbon emissions, or Newts being squashed or something.

chasing someone around at high speed is hardly Covert surveillance Shocked
think the "crooks" may spot them, better if HMRC spent there time going after the real tax evaders (big Business)
and stop wasting peoples time

Just proves that speed limits are bogus.

Errr, repost police Police Police

HM Revenue and Excise wants power to exceed speed limits from T.C and 13:39 is first one.

On topic I can't see the justification for HMRC.
Unless like the case of that copper in Telford (yes, it still rankles me) they fancy familiarising themselves with high performance vehicles on the public highway for the fun of it.

It only surprises me that it's taken them so long to request it. IIRC HMRC have some powers of detention that the Police are jealous of.

Yes, they are somewhat of a law unto themselves. Witness the seizing of vehicles that have been on booze cruises, on the legal basis of "what are you going to do about it?"

I've suggested previously that should you ever be detailed by Immigrations or HMRC on entering the country then give some semi-serious consideration to legging it, finding a real copper, and knocking his hat off. I know who I'd rather be dealing with.
