Howdy do BcF People.. Thumbs Up

Well.. after a bit of dancing around in the mini workshop, Spooky accidentally spilt hot chocolate over his project stator Evil or Very Mad

So.. now that other bike is gone, Spooky is trying to decide over the SV650 or the GS500 for his Uni commuting and etc

I have considered the...Ninja 500 (GPZ500) & the Honda Bros & the Hyosung GT 650R

In terms of fixing it..
If i can dismantle it there's 90% chance i'll be able to fix the problem.

Yes i have given all possibilities huge amounts of research time, thought and ergo-thinkage.

Honda Bros (Can't find one and not willing to travel FAR for a 400 regardless of its rep)

SV: Yea... Insurance is like 100 quid, keep it for like 5 months before the usual.
GT650R - i like it because its unusual but same insurance as the SV
(Understandable really)

GS5 Its weirdly comfy just like the ninja 500 but filtering on it, just isn't fun as its acceleration tosses salad unless i've played with the sprockets and etc

I have strongly considered the Ninja 250r, not sure how it is for commuting though

SO PEOPLE CAN YOU HELP ME!??! I'M IN A STATE OF EMERGENCY THIS IS VERY DIFFICULT... YA KNOW?!

P.S please don't suggest a Enduro or those TDM Looking things, i have to be able to put the bike in "those" neighbourhood's theres a good chance i won't see it again if i went for a TDM or KLR

The Bros will be far too small for you. I'm 6'1" and it's pretty much too small for me...so you're doomed.

Out of that list I'd get a GPZ500 (only the yanks call it a Ninja), for frugality and simplicity, followed by the SV. However I know a few curvy SV owners and the reliability hasn't been particularly fantastic.

How many miles to Uni?

It is the GPZ500, not a Ninja.

I ride 5 days a week, nearly 60 miles a day on a 125 with no issues at all, its on 70,500 miles now and still going strong as ever. Anything bigger sitting at 70 would burn fuel, this is so economical.

What is your budget? I wouldn't recommend a GS500 to anyone really...they're simple and mostly reliable but not something I consider fun.

bros is tiny! im 6ft and it was horrible to ride, gs500 isn't all that much bigger

Brother had a GS, was dull and ugly but cheap and did the job.

I have an SV, it's awesome and beautiful and fantastically better than everything else.

Budget?

SV is marginally faster, no less comfortable. Has a decent bit of weather protection with fairings. I have found mine to be relatively reliable, and its used everyday and is over 10 years old.

Either are decent commuters, not much good at anything else, but boy do they commute.

ZZR6? Might be a little cramped though. 50MPG if you dont thrash it and reliable. Fairings are a bitch though and it seems to struggle to start when cold. It will, but will struggle.

Sv front coil issue can be solved with a "fender extender", Mines spot on in the wet now.

Reliabilty is the same as anything else that is 10 years old imo. I've got a bad one and its still pretty good.

£1500 should get you a decent curvy or an older pointy without too much hassle.

£90 insurance per month, so around £1000 a year. It is all circumstantial as we know, but my insurance is around £170 for the year so you should be ok there.

if you're 6'5" you might have trouble fitting on and SV650, i'm 6'4" and a mate let me have a go on his once, it was crazy awkward to ride cause my feet were too far forward, but then again i'm not very bendy.

I'd say best way to find out is go down a used bike dealers or breakers and sit on a few to try them for yourself.

Even with my stumpy pins, I find myself pondering the possibility of fettling some "highway pegs" on my GPZ500. Not a big bike.

The only reason to call it a Ninja is to troll real Ninja owners. Wink

How about a Bandit? They're a bit more man sized than either the GPZ or the SV, and you can get a nice example in your budget.

Actually, you could get a Divvy 900 in your price range.
